The Pros And Cons Of Arming

Improved Essays
Summary Those who are for arming teachers believe that having armed staff members within schools will prevent school shooters from targeting the establishments (Gunter). Those against the idea state that it could cause more problems, especially for black and latino children, due to racial bias (Scott). Those for the idea of arming teachers also mention that it could prevent casualties at schools in areas where it will take the police a longer time to arrive (Gunter). Those against arming teachers quickly attempt to rebut this by saying that giving teachers guns could cause more casualties as there could be false shots in a shootout (Lopez).
Current Event Recently, Kansas has been considering a proposal that would make schools liable for mass shootings that might occur there if the institution does not have armed teachers. The proposal was prompted by the shooting in Parkland, Florida. This is concerning to many people as they believe that this is just one step toward mandating all teachers to be trained to shoot and to carry a gun. This proposal, if passed, would be one of the most intense bills that are for armed teachers. So far, nine other states have allowed schools to decide whether or not to arm teachers, but the Kansas bill is one of the first to ‘punish’ schools for not having at least one armed staff member (Willetts).

Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me.” This verse can show that it is ok with God that we use weapons in self defense, the main reason people wish to arm

Author Timothy Wheeler starts out his article with an incident happened at the Cleveland’s Success Tech Academy where four people were injured with no mortality as a result of quick elimination of the shooters. He moves on to point out the vulnerable areas of the ineffective school security and the gun free zone policy that makes school ground an easy target for psychopath killers. To prove his points, he gives us the mass murder of 1999 in Los Angeles Jewish day-care center that committed by Buford Furrow’s, and the raped and the massacre that happened between September and October 2006 in Bailey, Colorado which committed by Nickel Mines. He brings his point across that allows gun at school can be effective to stop the shooter from further executing innocent victims.…

27th February 2018 Miami Herald 3511 NW 91 Ave Doral, Florida, US. 33172 Dear Editor, Yesterday, you reported on the tragedy that occurred in Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, where seventeen innocent people had lost their lives. This is ridiculous as the United States Legislative Body doesn’t seem to be affected and not being able to resolve this problem. The Legislative Body’s solution is to increase school security by having experienced teachers possess guns during school hours to defend students and themselves. This solution is perceiving as teachers may use the guns to protect themselves but not the students.…

Arming teachers would prevent shooters from coming if they were looking for an easy target (Hagin, Para. 14). This intimidates the shooter because they know that they won't have an easy target at all and that they would most likely die. Matthew Santoni, a well known journalist states,“Gun-free zone to a maniac -- because they're all cowards -- a gun-free zone is 'let's go in and let's attack because bullets aren't coming back at us. If we did not arm teachers then the shooter would know that it is a gun free zone and come (“Arming Teacher Pros”, 18-19). Not arming teachers in this situation is an absolute disaster, thinking about it a shooter could come in as a free soul with no problem to kill anyone they see, but with teachers armed and trained then the teachers could easily rush to the situation and take care of it.…

The dangers associated with allowing teachers to have guns on the property creates “diminished safety for students, faculty, staff, and visitors” (The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, 2000, p.2). The most prominent concerns reasonably revolve around both “mental illness… and the misuse of firearms” (Malcolm, 2016, p. 1). Higher risk levels of injuries and fatalities occur when firearms are used improperly, and a vast number of people are uneducated on the proper handling of defense weapons. Perhaps a teacher’s mental instability could be unleashed on an irritating student by an easily accessed bullet rather than a simple scolding. The opposing side is very skeptical of the sanity and morals of teachers and their possession of guns in the classroom.…

Proposals offered by the gun lobby to repeal the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act and arm teachers as a solution to curb those rare instances of gun violence at school. Teachers are not trained law enforcement officers – their purpose is to be educators and role models. Gun violence prevention measures for our schools should focus on educating kids about the dangers of firearms, and reminding gun-owning parents to safely own and secure firearms and ammunition, rather than on arming teachers. A study of 37 school shootings in 26 states found that in nearly two-thirds of the incidents, the attacker got the gun from his or her own home or…

When a shooter is on campus, a teacher can defend the students from the shooter by carrying a gun. According to ABC action news, "McGhee says he would prefer to see a study done involving all stakeholders, looking into what can be done to protect students, and then change should be implemented based on factual findings. " The shooter would have more of a challenge killing students if a teacher is armed with a handgun. The teacher could save many lives and injuries by defending their students. Moreover, A teacher could defend herself and save their own life with the help of their gun.…

I believe that teachers and other officials at the school should be required to have background checks frequently and also be trained on how to fire weapons. They should also be trained on how to protect the students in case of a school shooting. Every teacher, if they meet the requirements, should be able to keep a handgun and ammunition in a safe place that is close to them at all times, whether it be on their hip in a holster, a desk drawer, a cabinet, or some other place. I do not believe the students should be allowed to carry their weapons around school, due to a student possibly getting mad and firing their weapon at someone else. Most shootings happen at schools or places like schools that have rules that make it to where you cannot…

One of his points is that a lot of teachers had never fired a gun before, and then he said that they are trying to hand a teacher a gun and expect them to use it. The author also said that if a shooting ever happens and a teacher has a gun that they would not have the nerve to shoot the shooter. Next in the article the author says that public defenders know what they are getting themselves into, but he said that teachers did not and don't sign up for that kind of work. One thing he is missing is that not all have to carry a gun so you have the choice. The author also said that some people that carry guns in schools may not have a lot of experience, but if you look into the schools that do carry they require the teacher to go through courses to carry and a law enforcement course to carry, and shooting courses yearly.…

Specialists have grasped the concept of becoming proactive instead of reactive to situations where lives are at stake. Professionals believe that arming teachers in school districts can help protect children from the up rise of violence in school. Although this idea may be a headed in the right direction, I feel as if there are more effective procedures. Hiring armed security guards removes the cost a school would have to pay to train teachers. This will also eliminate the risk of schools being dropped from their insurance policies or having to pay more as a result of having armed teachers.…

Mr. Dewey tells in his paper that, “Incidents of gun violence on campuses date back more than two centuries. Reports of shootings on campuses during the eighteenth and nineteenth century most often involved disturbed teachers turning guns on unruly students” (Dewey). Though shootings as long as two centuries ago involved teachers and professors firing shots at the misbehaving students, shootings of the twenty-first century usually involve a former or current student returning to his or her hated place. The majority of gun violence at schools could have been prevented or stopped sooner with armed and trained teachers on campus. Campuses can install metal detectors and better surveillance systems, including higher focusing cameras and possibly hidden microphones, to have a better knowledge of what is going on in the classrooms and halls.…
