The Pros And Cons Of Arming Teachers

Improved Essays
Is arming our teachers really a good idea? As you may have heard over the news, Donald Trump has proposed that arming teachers would be the best solution for the irrational amounts of school mass shootings. Students from Stoneman Douglas High School had made this issue a whole lot more relevant by marching for their countless fellow peers that had been shot down on February 14th of this year. I strongly believe that arming teachers would be completely absurd and illogical. Arming them could result in situations where the teacher could shoot their own students, violence certainly does not solve violence, and are teachers really prepared to shoot? Firstly, arming teachers could potentially backfire because the teacher might be having a bad day or might just have some sort of mental illness which would cause them to shoot their own students. Teachers can commonly get annoyed with their students or have the blues some days, and in a situation where the teacher is armed, could possibly lead to harm. For example, a professor might have just been dumped out of a relationship and her class is being noisy, that could trigger her to grab the gun and start shooting. Armed teachers could shoot their own students out of annoyance or stress and anxiety. …show more content…
It will just result in violence against violence which would just result in a more chaotic and corrupted world. Imagine that a school shooter comes to your classroom and starts shooting. Your teacher grabs the gun and starts shooting back and now everyone is just praying that their teacher doesn’t get shot. What are the chances of a teacher against a shooter, who most likely has experience with a gun? It would just result in the teacher being more vulnerable and helpless. Teachers being armed will not guarantee safety for anyone and will just result in a battle to who dies or gets shot

If teachers have access to the weapons, an intruder could also gain access only increasing the potential for violence. Concealed handguns in the schools would be kept in a secure area and teachers and administrators would have strict procedures in carrying the gun on school grounds. There would be more responsibility for the teachers and administrators, but in order to protect students teachers would welcome new regulations. The battle continues in state legislatures across the country.…

They might say the teacher will get angry and and use the gun to shoot a student. Or maybe a student will try to wrestle the gun from the teacher, succeed with the task, and immediately turn and shoot the teacher. Mike Blakely, a former student and now parent at the Harold School District, said it loud and clear, “I’m sure if some crazy man came into our school, acting like a patriot, we would… pop a cap in em’, quick, to protect our kids.” Many teachers I know would do the same if it came to it. One death from a faulty gun is no match for hundreds of student and teacher deaths being killed by…

Many teachers and administrators are unsure about how pupils may handle altercations and stressors of everyday campus life with the easy access of guns and worry that talking to students about their schoolwork and grades can cause retaliation. Another problem they face is how much it will cost and what it will take to beef up security on campuses. Firearms should not be…

The majority of new policies are met with a mixture of praise and criticism. However, it would be a challenge to find any teacher who does not believe it is his or her responsibility to protect the students. Allowing teachers to be armed in the classroom would increase the likelihood of everyone surviving if an active shooter enters the room because it would provide additional protection if the teachers are properly trained. Knowing any of us could be armed by making this policy public knowledge could make the possibility of that shooter entering the building even less likely. Hopefully no school will ever need to evaluate if this was the right decision or not, but in case that day does come, it would be better to determine the effectiveness of allowing teachers to be armed than having to determine how to attend a dozen students’ funerals or leaving my family to plan…

What I think... Teachers should not have guns because what if a kid got caught in a crossfire of the guns. Another reason that teachers should not carry guns is like at a high school kids if they got left in a room Unattended and the teacher the the gun in the desk and the kid knew it and the kid got ahold of the gun. Then that would end in disaster. Another reason that teachers should not have guns is that what if a student had been constantly annoying and being disrespectful and the teacher finally just snapped and shot the kid, that would send the teacher to jail and the kid either to heaven or to the hospital. Another reason that teachers should not have guns is that teachers are there to teach the kids not be a security guards or a babysiter.…

In an age where people are trying to take guns away from law-abiding citizens; we need our guns now more than ever. Everytime there is a mass shooting this debate pops up, yet we continue to have mass shootings. If some teachers were allowed to conceal and carry guns in schools, mass shootings would dwindle. The resource officer at the Parkland shooting never went inside and 17 children died, meanwhile, the resource officer at the Maryland school shooting engaged the shooter and saved countless lives. This illustrates the effects that a capable person with a gun can have on saving the lives of children.…

The fact that the firearms are concealed is crucial. Since the handguns are concealed, a criminal would be unable to detect whether a classroom has armed staff or not (Crime Prevention Research Center). Students who are nervous when seeing firearms wouldn't be scared because the handguns would be hidden. President Trump advises school boards to protect the staff of each district with insurance to reduce the risk of liability, which should put those with concern for the staff at ease (“Arming Teachers and School Staff”).…

Specialists have grasped the concept of becoming proactive instead of reactive to situations where lives are at stake. Professionals believe that arming teachers in school districts can help protect children from the up rise of violence in school. Although this idea may be a headed in the right direction, I feel as if there are more effective procedures. Hiring armed security guards removes the cost a school would have to pay to train teachers. This will also eliminate the risk of schools being dropped from their insurance policies or having to pay more as a result of having armed teachers.…

Over the past few years there has been an escalation in the use for guns. One reason for why this might be happening is because the guns are being used for mass school shootings, such as: the Sandy Hook shooting, the Parkland shooting, and many others that people don't even know about. This problem has now caused a controversy over whether teachers should carry guns while working in school or not. Many people believe that the only way to defend children during these shootings is if the staff carry guns. Although this idea seems to have many great advantages against shooters, it also opens room for more issues involving the children and the teachers.…

These teachers should go through the most intensive background check because they have the ability to hurt a lot more kids than a random person trying to shoot up a school. If the teachers can get a hold on a gun and then tell the guy with the gun that every class is packed and ready to shoot then I believe the maniac will come to his senses and get out of the school. I feel the same way about guns in the workplace. For example at my mom's shop, she was looking at the cameras and someone was breaking into a truck late at night and instead of my mom having a gun for self-defense at her work place she had to take cover as the robber shot a bullet in her direction. This is why I feel so strongly about gun rights and where you can and can't take them.…
