The evolution of animal experimentation continued to the point where animals underwent surgical procedures before applying them to human patients. During the twentieth century most medical accomplishments were dependent on the use of animals. Before 1900 it was assumed that foods needed to contain carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and minerals, but the exact portion and quality was unknown (Gershoff 96). Biomedical scientists during this time experimented on animals with various diseases like scurvy, Rickets, and Beriberi. By feeding the animals different types of foods containing fatty acids, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients the diseases were cured (Gershoff 96-97). As researchers later discovered the main cause of these diseases were consequences of a dietary deficiency. Vitamin and nutrition research became very popular during this time, and millions of lives were saved and protected because of the new discoveries. Also, birds, guinea pigs, and dogs played a big role on the discovery of Vitamin A, vitamin B, and vitamin D, during this time (Gershoff 96). Today, animal experimentation occurs for medical research; in specific, for the discoveries of new cures, the discoveries of treatments, and for newfound knowledge that would benefit …show more content…
Animals have helped with advanced improvement of medicines, cures, and treatments. Humans that agree with animals testing feel that there is a greater priority and obligation to save humans as well as a moral obligation to stop human sickness and illnesses (BBC). Animal testing has helped improve human health, especially nutritional discoveries during the twentieth century. Animals have played a big role in vitamin and nutrition research. Animal testing is valuable for understanding and treating human health. Then why not use the main “subject” instead of animals? The medicines tested are for humans, so humans should be the ones being used for all of the safety test. However, new technologies have been made to address human research; therefore, reducing animal
