Advertising is not a form of mass medium, but it pays for mass medium. It is a paid form of presentation of ideas, goods, or services by a sponsor. Advertising is used to promote books, recordings, movies, and other media entities. It is seen in television, newspapers, magazines, and even on billboards. Advertising revenue for all media totaled $354 billion in 2009. Advertising started in 1200 B.C., the Phoenicians painted message on stones. In the 6th century B.C., ships came into port with goos sent messengers ashore to announce their arrival. In 1478, William Caxton prints an advertisement of his latest book, so advertising has been used throughout history. The first American newspaper advertisement appeared in the Boston News-Letter in 1704. Newspapers rely on advertisement to compensate for the cost of producing the paper. Repetition simply means repeating the message as much as possible. Ads need a style to be useful and gain the attention of the users. Ads are ubiquitous. Advertisers are always trying to find places to put ads. The only setback is too many advertisements create too much competition. Advertisements shows there are 15 ways to appeal consumers. The 15 ways are the human: need for sex, need for affiliation, need to nurture, need for guidance, ned to aggress, need to achieve, need to dominate, need for prominence, need for attention, need for autonomy, need to escape, need to feel safe, need for aesthetic sensation, need to satisfy curiosity, physiological needs. All of these 15 ways helps advertisers create content that is targeted to exact audiences. Advertisers use demographics—data about the age, gender, income, martial status, geographic location of the consumers. Finding a medium that has exact demographics makes it easier for advertisers to buy
