At least ten percent of adolescents in the US are suffering from mental illness, which if left untreated can lead to delinquency and truancy, making them enact in behaviors or crime that can land them in prison. Although there are many different kinds of therapies and treatments available to fight depression, it eventually comes to the state of mind the individual is in. Invariably, medicines prescribed to cure some illnesses can have a counter effect, as chemical imbalances can push them into deeper forms of depression or lead to suicidal thoughts or behavior and thus individuals on antidepressant medications should be watched closely. Based on the study published in the American Journal of Public Health (2003), depression is most common in Hispanics (10.8%), followed by African Americans (8.9%) and then Whites (7.8%).
