Academic advising is an essential part to a college student’s life. Without it, most students would not know which direction to go with their respected academic fields or which classes to take in order to achieve the associate’s degree here at the College of Southern Maryland. But there is a problem with academic advising not only here at the Leonardtown Campus, but the La Plata and Prince Frederick campus’ as well. The majority of the time when a student goes in to see the academic advisor, they are left waiting longer than it takes in order to solve the problem they are currently facing. Students have experienced waiting times anywhere from half an hour to two hours on some accounts. I have personally encountered long periods of waiting just …show more content…
For starters, the walk in hours to see the academic advisor are so scarce especially when considering a student’s classes that they must attend. Another problem that these students are faced with is their own work schedules they must accommodate for as well. Between classes, work and other life activities, it is almost impossible to fit in the academic advisor. Not to mention the wait that goes along with it. This is a problem that needs to be solved in order to properly meet the needs of the students here at CSM. The time that it takes to see the advisor could potentially go towards other tasks such as homework or studying that the students need to accomplish for their various classes. If seeing the academic advisor could be an in and out process, not only would it benefit the students, it would also benefit the school by allowing more of their students to graduate successfully with the classes that they …show more content…
Some people may say that the wait for the academic advisor is not that long. These are the people that have not needed to register for classes or urgently needed to see the advisor for some other matter. To go along with this, when people eventually get in to see the academic advisor, some of them feel as if they are rushed due to the advisor wanting to meet with everyone before the walk-in hours are complete. Another point that may be argued is whether or not another academic advisor should be hired. It can be argued that the money being used for another advisor could be put towards more important matters such as newer technology or improved food vendors. But the truth is that without the students properly seeing the advisor, there would be a lot less students at CSM than there is now. The wait to see the academic advisor is a problem that many students, including myself, have been faced with over the course of their time here at CSM. There is absolutely no reason why students have to wait any more than ten minutes to see the academic advisor, especially when it is something that they need to have answered promptly. This is a problem that needs to be solved sooner rather than later in order to properly accommodate the students as well as the one academic advisor that is being overwhelmed by the number of
