Planned Parenthood Debate Analysis

It is one of the most talked about and debatable topics out there in our society today. It is a topic that is seen as black and white, but in retro-spec, one might say it is a black and gray debate (or white and gray). It is abortion. Abortion is the termination or, as some would say, killing of a fetus. Much like evolution, it is a taboo and hard to tackle topic for our government and society. The world is torn between two logical perspectives that everyone had a right to--- religious or scientific beliefs. But as the debate goes on, it is as if the law-makers are slowly closing in on women and their rights to their own physical being. Jon Stewart asked why he couldn’t “just make a compelling argument?” (Davis) Jon Kyl later confessed that it was simply because the facts and statistics were opposing his views and beliefs and he needed a more appealing argument. Thus, his argument was discredited. Planned Parenthood is a center designed to be a resource and safe haven for young people and women seeking help with preparing for the responsibilities and risks that come with sexual intercourse. Besides abortions, they offer many services such as birth control, counseling, physical examinations (that less costly than most clinics), and pre-natal care. There are not too many Planned Parenthood centers that actually perform abortions. If they do not perform such procedures, they are willing to refer a patient to a clinic that will (Planned Parenthood). Why would people fight against such a helpful and crucial facility in our communities (especially with so many lacking healthcare)? This or that. Those who are pro-life are predominantly against abortion. There are no exceptions. If a woman gets pregnant, she needs to go through full term pregnancy. But for pro-choice people, it is different. To be pro-choice is not to be anti-pregnancy. They simply believe in having a choice, be it choosing to become a mother, adopt, or abort. For example, if it were to become illegal to adopt or put children up for adoption, both parties would inevitably end up fighting on the same side, wouldn’t they? A true story example of someone who lies within the gray field is a lady named Danielle who wrote an article titled“Becoming a Mother Made Me MORE Pro Choice”. And as the article title says, becoming a mother made her even more pro-choice. She has gone to rally’s fighting for Pro-choice rights while having a big pregnant belly. It is not that she regrets having her children. Two out of three of her children were actually planned pregnancies. She is just a woman who has lived both sides of the spectrum. Once upon a time she could not imagine herself with children, and now she cannot imagine life without them. “My difficult pregnancies made me realize that women should never be forced into a choice, like pregnancy and childbirth, unless it is something they truly want, are prepared for and consent to” she says to support her reasons.
