Diet refers to a person’s food consumption and requisite supply chemical energy for cellular processes, organic molecules for biosynthesis that is; macromolecule production, and essential nutrients. Our diet maybe habitual that is; it consists of the same proportion of nutrient every day; usually balanced. Due to various reasons a person may restrict their diet to obtain versatile desired results for example weight loss. A balanced diet should contain 2/3 carbohydrates (including roughage), 1/6 protein, 1/6 fat, minerals, vitamins and water. Alteration of these proportions to obtain a tailored diet for whatever reasons have specific implications on an individual’s health, some more pronounced than others. This may be beneficial or pernicious as such each pro and con should be well thought and considered before deciding on a personalized diet. One such type of diet is the high fat and low carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrates are the major energy source of energy for the body, yielding 4 kcal in every gram. It is a necessity for normal fat metabolism. Fat is a more concentrated source of energy- one gram yields 9 kcal. …show more content…
A typical example of such a case was illustrated by Lockie and Hubbard when they studied the effect of a high fat diet on patients with gout. They placed four gout patients whose symptoms had subsidies on a high fat low carbohydrate diet and they observed a prompt return of the symptoms, as well as by a reduction of uric acid output and a rise in blood uric acid. These patients were then put on a high carbohydrate low fat diet, which prompted a relief in symptoms. The factor responsible for the decrease in uric acid excretion in the urine of subjects on a high fat diet was concluded to not be the increased calorie intake but rather the high fat content itself.
