“In 2015, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers intercepted 2,653 firearms in carry-on bags at airport security checkpoints across the United States,” (TSA). With this large amount of interceptions, the screening process is doing something right. Without the security checkpoints, there could have been more attacks and more life threatening strikes. Others may argue that there are licenses to carry firearms, but when it comes to loaded guns on an enclosed plane, it puts peoples lives at risk. “Of the 2,653 firearms discovered in carry-on bags at checkpoints across the country, 2,198 (82.8 percent) were loaded,” (TSA). Being able to carry a firearm on an aircraft, licensed or not, is overridden when it comes to the safety of innocent civilians. Any firearm or weapon is not necessary for “safety” on flights. TSA screening leads people through a process of security checks to confirm they are not handling any firearms, explosives, or weapons. “Under new measures, CAPPS selectees must now undergo a body search and have their bags thoroughly examined,” (Brezina). These new measures, some may say, invade their privacy, but scanning for life threatening weapons should be no issue when it comes to safety. A scan for any harmful devices does not invade someone’s privacy, TSA employees do not care about what your secret hobbies are unless it involves harmful weapons on an aircraft. TSA guidelines don’t only require passengers to go through screening, but a few more checks as well, “this involves checking that the passenger’s name is not on the terrorist watch list, which includes the “No Fly” list as well as a list of individuals who require stricter security checks in order to fly,” (Brezina).
