With growing widespread use of nuclear power, around the world and the historic nuclear disaster, of Chernobyl, still in peoples minds it begs the question of whether or not the pros outweigh the cons. Nuclear power provides 20% of the power inside the United States according to the Nuclear Energy Institute and with 104 nuclear power plants inside the US alone the security of these power plants can not be overlooked.
Since 911 the security of nuclear power plants took a drastic reform as it showed the real threat of terrorism. With the fear of another 911 regulations were put in place to ensure the security of nuclear power plants around the world after a nuclear power security summit took place. Security and safety at a nuclear power plant are by far the most important thing. One nuclear power plant Indian Point Energy Centre ,located on the Hudson river and producing 25% of the power for NYC ,has had a few minor incident none significant enough to warrant closure ,but strict reform was needed to ensure both the safety and security of the plant. According to Indian point Energy Center the nuclear facility has spent $50,000,000 to upgrade, replace, overhaul, and inspect hundreds of pieces of equipment that help make the plant safer. Indian point has operated for 40 years and inspections were done as a post Fukushima Federally mandated order another example of how the government is ensuring safety is a priority. Indian Point have spent 150 million dollars on security since 911 and for every 6 weeks a Indian point control room operator works he receives six weeks of training spending over a billion dollars in safety this nuclear power plant is secure and will continue to provide power to NYC. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute the building of a nuclear facility in the US opens up 3,500 jobs and the operation of a nuclear plant creates 400 to 700 long term jobs. These jobs according to Nuclear Matters also pay 36% more than the average local jobs. The construction of a nuclear facility doesn’t just create jobs for workers, but also gives business to the manufacturers of necessary supplies needed to build a nuclear facility. For example, the average nuclear facility uses 1,200,000 cubic feet of concrete to build a nuclear facility the same amount used in the building of the Pentagon. This produces jobs because the concrete has to be delivered and made. There are also 66,000 tons of steel needed the same amount used in the erection of the empire state building and 44 miles of piping needed these items create jobs in many different areas of manufacturing. Other jobs are also created in the mining of uranium that is found in many places around the world. According again to the Nuclear Energy Institute the security of these nuclear facility single handedly produces 9000 jobs a year across the
