The Process Of Writing: Shitty First Draft

Writing may come natural to some people but that is not always the case to many people. Many people sit and flush all their thoughts out on a piece of paper but then polish it up. It is simply called a first draft but as AnneLamott would call it a “Shitty First Draft”. Professional writers use the process of drafts to reach to their final piece of writing. First drafts are just ways writers explore their thoughts and a build a story. I strongly believe that first drafts should be implemented into the writing composition of all high school nation-wide because they can improve their writing by using that process.

Some people may think that writings drafts are a waste of time and they are just rushing to get to the final product. But there are 5 important steps to becoming a successful writer. According to Time4Writing the five steps are prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Professional writer’suse this process often.Writers like AnneLamottuse this process to improve her writing and what she is trying to say. She states in her writing “For me and most of the other writers I know, writing is not rapturous. In the step 1 pre-writing, the writer is determines their purpose for writing and writers analyze their audience. What is a piece of writing that has no purpose? Then it is simply not a piece of writing at all. The national center for education statics states that “Data from the 1992 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in Writing indicate that "teachers' encouragement of ... process-related activities was strongly related to average writing proficiency."(1) Students whose teachers encouraged certain aspects of process writing averaged higher performance on the NAEP writing assessment.” I would rather have improved writing than being stuck on the same pace writing for
