Wiesler who was a good officer and had a good normal life, is now selling newspapers. At the last scene, we are seeing him walking down the street carrying this cart of newspaper. He is alone, by himself, wearing normal gray clothes. This could represent how most East Germans were feeling during those years. They were kind of like outsiders to all these West Germans. It was like they were from two different worlds. The West Germans were doing better economically and now that they were all together they need to share everything, like if before there was a job just for the amount of people that were in the West, now those jobs were for both West and East and so that causes a lot of economic problems. Also, these people were leaving two different lifestyles for years and so when all of a sudden, the wall was down, getting used to each other’s lifestyle was not that easy. Even though, as we see in the film The Lives of Others, people were under watch and things were not that easy, but still after the unification, a lot of people believed that their life was better before, in the GDR.
