The Flint, Michigan Water Crisis
In Flint, Michigan there was a water contamination problem. Flint is a majority black city where 40 percent of people live in poverty. The water crisis started in April 2014, after Flint changed its water source from treated Detroit Water and Sewerage Department water to the Flint River. After that, people started complaining about the quality of the water. City and state officials failed to see that there was a serious problem for months. State officials think that Edwards and his team specialized in looking for high lead problems. In September 2015 there was a press conference to discuss Virginia Techs analysis of water from 277 Flint homes. DEQ chief said that the state used the wrong federal water rules in Flint for 17 months. On September 21, 2015, the MEDQ Brad Wurfel said Flint’s water supply met all state and federal water quality standards. He added that homes with lead service connections and lead plumbing always have been imparting some part-per-billion of lead which is a concern.
September 25, 2015, a pediatrician released a study that shows that lead levels doubled in children since the switch. On October 8, 2015, Governor Snyder finally announces that he will allow flint to return to Detroit system. He also said there was no reason to assigning blame to the completely avoidable man-made disaster. The Flint water crisis began to become national media. They didn’t know until it happened. It was easy for state officials to change the water system in Flint. There was a light of oversight. Repercussions weren’t there for the state officials, the people of Flint couldn’t really fight back. Along with the institutions theory policies are explained as resulting from the structure of the government. “People who believe in the free market cut spending drastically and that lead to the water in Flint being poisoned. Oh, and such people are racist too”
