Big Problem With Big Consequences Speaking on Presidential Palace, Jakatra, Prince Charles of wales, who has been advocating for forest conservation for years said, “ Forests are the world 's air conditioning system-the lungs of our planet and we are in the verge of switching it off”(Charles 14).He illustrates the bitter truth which is well known facts to majority of people yet ignored so badly that the amount of forests spreading around our globe has been deteriorating every year. The rapid rise of temperature is one of many outcomes of rapid destruction of forests.Still, there are a few people who argue on existence of deforestation as a problem. Enormous amount of forest lands are cleared every year for various purposes. It just requires an average brain to think of products used by eight-billion people coming directly or indirectly from forests and the number of trees cut down for that product. WWF- World Wide Fund for Nature, an international non-governmental organization working for enviornment conservation since 1961 estimates 13,000,000 hectars of forests are cut down every year(Deforestation, 1). Supporting that, Crystal Davis, director of Global Forest Watch,a powerful near-real-time forest monitoring system in her blog writes, over the last thirteen years, we have been loosing forest area of around fifty soccer field every minute (Davis 6). The good thing is that many people are already aware about this problem. In my field research, ninety percent students said they are aware of the problem of deforestation. The fast rate of cutting down is the reason behind deforestation being such a serious concern. Alina Bradford, cites Natural Resource Defence Council describing deforestation as, “ an ecological trauma that has no precedent in nature for expect major volcanic eruption”(Bradford 7).She also cited NASA predicting if this rate goes on, there will be no forests within next hundred years(Bradford 3).The consequences of deforestation are so harsh that the effects we are facing clearly justifies why it is labeled as trauma by NRDC.
