Description The Problem We All Live With is an oil painting on canvas that artist Normal Rockwell created in 1964. The artwork is measured at exactly 36” x 58”. The Problem We All Live With is from the permanent collection of the Norman Rockwell Museum, which is located at Stockbridge, Massachusetts. This artwork was created after Ruby Bridges attended William J. Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans on November 14, 1960. This image captures the menacing act that white people did to African Americans during desegregation and their attempted to be equal. Ruby Bridges is a small, African American girl, probably no older than 7 or 8. She has her dark, short hair pulled back in pigtails and wears an all-white outfit. It is very unclean and dirty looking. Along the background of the illustration viewers can see that racism plays a role during the creation of this artwork. To the right, next to one of the U.S. marshals, we can see that an angry citizen has thrown a tomato in Ruby’s direction. Their intent was to hit her, but it hit the wall instead. We can see where the tomato has slid down the wall, leaving a slimly trail all the way down the wall till it slouches on the ground. The impact of the tomato leaves a large splatter and small remnants on the wall. Next to the red splatter there are offensive words written in huge and small letters with the intent to intimidate Ruby. Right above Ruby’s head is the racial slur commonly used “nigger”. This word is written is large letters in the middle of the wall. There is also the acronym “KKK” scratched onto the wall in front of the two leading U.S. marshals. It is a lot smaller, but still has a significant impact on viewers when they notice it. The environment shown is full of racism and disrespect towards a young girl. It shows viewers, without even showing the angry mob, that Ruby was surrounded by hate and anger as she made her way to
