The Problem Of Unemployment In Vermont

Improved Essays
The Vermont Economy is struggling even though we have a low unemployment rate. This unemployment rate masks the real truth most Vermonters are only making an average of a little over fifteen dollars. Fifteen dollars an hour is not enough to support a family of four in today’s economy. Personally I work in college and, I make minimum wage and that’s just enough to buy gas and groceries for the week. I couldn’t imagine trying to raise a family in Vermont on these wages. A pure indication on Vermont’s plummeting Economy, are the children in elementary school who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Twelve years ago only twenty five percent of kids in K-12 were eligible for these promotions. Now twelve years later forty percent of the children enrolled

Brinnnng! Brinnnng!. For many public school students, the sounding of the lunch bell signifies a delightful break from perceived mundaneness. A time to relax, kick back, crack some jokes, and if one’s lucky, steal a kiss before replacing the energy expend on the mornings arithmetics with a healthy lunch packed by a parent, or sold at the school’s cafeteria. For other students, hidden amongst this calamity, the ringing of the lunch bell resonates bittersweet, sounding their provided daily bread, perhaps the most sustenance they’ll have till tomorrows bell tolls the same unfair song.…

In America during the 1930s, unemployment was an issue that caused many debates over how to deal with it and the same is true now. A common proposal to manage unemployment is to provide insurance for the unemployed, which would support those who are unable to work, such as seasonal workers, and improve the economy during economic depression. However, providing insurance for the unemployed would actually increase the unemployment rate and harm the economy. Instead, the American government should continue its welfare system, giving out support as needed, those of retiring age should retire, and individual businesses should create a reserve fund that unemployed workers could draw from for their paycheck when they are unable to work. Today, nearly…

Recently there has been massive social unrest around the country in response to the many social justice issues Americans are facing daily. Even as progressive laws are passed to further basic rights of oppressed groups, social action has been continuing in an effort to spread awareness of the abysmal state of this country in regard to institutionalized racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, etc. Yet, for all the impressive effort made by so many, food-politics is often an oversight made by even those who hope to move America into a more inclusive and socially sustainable condition. But when we talk about other social issues, especially racism and classism, it is irresponsible to leave food out of the discussion. Specifically, food deserts continue…

“I don’t think a country as great as ours should pay people so little that they need help from the state just to survive. ”(Perez) A raise in the minimum wage can be seen as a moral obligation in a country such as ours, that is supposedly, the greatest and most advanced country in the world. But if we can’t make it possible for all who work hard for forty plus hours a week to live out of poverty, what are we really? School-age children in these households are likely to be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. Most such households are also eligible for benefits from WIC if they include children under the age of five or pregnant women. Prevalence rates of food insecurity for households with annual incomes less than 185 percent of the Federal poverty line were considerably higher — more than twice as high — as those for all households with children. Trends over the period 1999-2007 in low-income households were generally similar to those in all households with children, although changes…

Unemployment in the United States is a serious problem that continues to grow due to a number of reasons. The first major cause is due to job out sourcing overseas, particularly China where the labor costs are extremely low. The next big reason for unemployment in the U.S. is because of the high taxes which rank close to the worst of any country in the world. (A. Krulick, Debt.org)…
