Refugees have existed ever since there has been conflict in the world; both World Wars, displacement of Jews and Palestinians, the India and Pakistan border conflict, and even the aftermath of Japanese imperialism. Although refugees have been a huge issue throughout history, the recent crisis has brought over one million refugees into Europe in just 2015. Today, more than 65 million people are forced out of their home country as a result of persecution, violence or natural disasters. The conflict in Syria certainly is the biggest cause of migration; but the seemingly endless violence in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as poverty in other Middle Eastern countries, force people to find safety elsewhere. Our goal today is to persuade everyone to call, write, and email or visit their Senator or Representative and let their voice be heard about spending our tax dollar money outside of the U.S. and wastefully inside the U.S. when there are people and items here that need attention first. The U.S. spends billions oversees to help other nations, with food, medical supplies, military equipment, and just plain money, why? We understand humanitarian efforts and help thy neighbor, however not sure why we spend so much giving military equipment and cash to other nations, while there are those right here at home in need. In our personal lives we cannot give our money away if we need it to take care of our family and backyard first. So how and why does…

Fortunately, I have past experiences teaching English and learning it myself as an ELL (English language learner) student. I have taught English in local schools in Cambodia, to children who could not afford education and worked with several NGOs (non-governmental organizations) in the process. While working with those children, I developed not only teaching skills, but my passion too becoming a teacher. My work led me to pursuit my career in education, so I can provide it to those who are as passionate and eager about it as I am. Since I have always done volunteer work, it was only routinely for me to contact organizations and work with them.…

An ongoing issue that is present in this period of time is the discrimination against refugees in America. Although “nearly half a million refugees were resettled in the United States” between 2007 to 2016, that amount only makes up a small fraction of the total of 22 million people classified as fugitives. Furthermore, only 28 000 refugees were admitted into America in 2017, which is a drastically low number when compared to the sum of 132 000 refugees that settled in 1992. Unfortunately, refugees have been labelled as irritating economic inconveniences, gruesome terrorists, and bothersome society outcasts.…

With all this talk of refugees in the news, perhaps knowing the definition of what a refugee actually is would be useful. The 1951 Refugee Convention defines a refugee as, “[A]ny person who: owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.” Another category of person related to refugees, but less discussed, most likely due to the fact that they aren’t as immediately relevant to us in western countries, is an internally displaced person. A document from the United Nations, Guiding Principles…

Countries have a moral obligation to protect the human rights of refugees. Refugees are people who have been forced from their countries within reasons varying from political unrest, persecution, and war; refugees are people who have been stripped of their human rights. To live in such dreadful environments is a direct violation of Article Three from The Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “the right to life, liberty and security” as well as Article Twenty-two, which is “the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation” (The United Nations 1948). Take for example the story of Yusra Mardini, a refugee: somewhere along the coast of Greece and Turkey, twenty people are crowded on a tattered boat, trying to reach asylum across the Mediterranean Sea. All the sudden, the motor begins to quiet.…
