I have no experience in crisis work, nor do I plan to go into that field, but I have lived with depression for most of my adolescent and adult life. I believe the burnout cycle is very similar to the depression cycle and the symptoms are often the same. Both the crisis worker experiencing professional burnout and an individual suffering from depression experience physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral maladies. Physical symptoms often include fatigue, insomnia, appetite changes, weakened immune system, headaches or migraines, aches and pains, and an increased risk of heart disease. Emotional symptoms may include feelings of guilt, worthlessness, sadness, anger, anxiety, frustration and suicidal ideation. Cognitive symptoms include confusion, difficulty making decisions, memory loss and distractibility. Burnout and depression can also lead to behavioral issues such as withdrawal from family and other social groups, absence from work, excessive drug, alcohol or tobacco use, self-harm and even suicide. In order for a self care plan to be effective it would need to address all four of these categories:

Nutrition: Don 't skip meals! Depression has been linked to a shortage of certain vitamins and minerals including B6, B12, D and folic acid. Additionally, some minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc have been shown to lessen the symptoms of depression (, 2015).…
