Great Essays
Focusing on my key topic of staffing ratios in nursing, I made a few statements that I wanted to pursue. As a Registered Nurse that works with a union I know a bit about the safe staffing campaign in New York. I looked at the list of bad research questions and made that my guide, I chose New York state as my area of reference, picking a time frame of the next ten years of so I created my topic parameters. In the recommended list of how to form a research question I took the question of how to compile my bits of information. Finally I have the end result of my question, how will Registered Nurse staffing laws in New York State effect health care in the next ten years? Moving forward from my question I had to pick up some articles and resources …show more content…
Using the keywords “safe staffing” and Nursing I found an article by Malloch the reading was kind of dry but full of Information, I did not see an abstract but I noticed it had some charts, that’s what I liked most about this article. The chart depicted the process of categorizing patients and determining how much care is needed for each patient, this knowledge is very important for making a point on why less patients per nurse is better for all (Malloch,2015). Keeping on the trail of data, Evidence based practice is essential for the evolution of nursing practice and health care. I used the same keywords and checked the full text box, pressing enter I spotted a title “SPN Position Statement on Safe Staffing: Recommendations for an Evidence-Based and Outcomes-Driven Staffing Plan” BINGO! This Journal Article has listed rational for why safe staffing is important, from decreasing Hospital acquired infections to increasing nurse retention (Van Allen, 2016). Answering my research question with only three sources I thought what about having to pay for these extra …show more content…
The article is very recent only being two years old and provided a good breakdown of data. It is written by Kathy Malloch PhD RN. I has a small chance to be a little bias, but I do not think it is because it uses no strong language that enforces the idea of reducing nurse to patient ratios. Using charts to compile data the organization of this article is very good. Articles like this is using the data to prove a point so I believe it is an appropriate source to use after all I am using it so hopefully it’s not a bad

The law requires additional RNs be assigned based on a documented patient classification system that measures patient needs and nursing care, including severity of illness and complexity of clinical need” (California RN Staffing Ratio Law, 2004). This law has been the staple to nurses across the country. It allows room for nurses to do their job and do it correctly without having to choose one patient over the other, as well as helping them become more satisfied with their jobs. There was a study to see the impact the nurse to patient ratio had on nurses and it showed that it notably lowered the likelihood of patient’s mortality and that nurses’ “burnout and job dissatisfaction were lower, and nurses reported consistently better quality of care” (Impact of Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Implications of the California Nurse Staffing Mandate for the Other States, 2011). This confirms the notion that laws such as this one do nothing but help increase the quality of care given to patients as well as ensuring that their nurses are satisfied with their…
