The Importance Of Social Loafing In Students

Decent Essays
Whether it is in school or out in the real world for your job, it is very likely that you will get assigned to groups to work on a certain project. Being assigned to work in groups causes many people to cringe just at the thought. We all have been in the situation where we had to work in groups and someone did not do their job, they did not pull their weight causing the other members to have to work extra time to get the work done. As established in the previous chapters this is commonly known as social loafing. It is when a person puts less effort into their work because there is a group of others and they believe that the slack will be picked up by another person in the group. The bigger the group the more likely it is …show more content…
Students should be taught at a young age several techniques that help them manage groups. Some topics that can be taught about are issues like, How to divide up the work, how to set what the group norms should be, and how to conduct group business (Aggarwal & O’Brien 2008). Why or how would this help reduce social loafing in classrooms? If students are taught these techniques at a young age they will be more prepared for group work. Students will know exactly what to expect from the group and what they will be expected to do for the group and there will be no unclear idea on what is …show more content…
If we translated this to classrooms if students think that their performance will be individually evaluated by the instructor or their group members or classmates the chance of them putting less effort into their work will increase. The bigger the group the more chances of social loafing occurring to control this instructors should keep the groups at a smaller size. If the members of the group feel that their contributions to the project are important to the project they will more likely work at full potential (Harkins, Latane, & Williams 1979). These are all ways in which the risk of social loafing will be reduced. In conclusion the best ways to fixing social loafing in classrooms is by preparing students at a young age how to work in groups and how to work with other students who might have a different work style then themselves. Having instructors take the time to allow students to get to know their group members before throwing them in to get graded on a project will help too. Students have to feel like what they are doing is

This keeps social loafing out of the question due to many individuals striving to complete the task at hand and keeping each other motivated. Origami frog was an example of a conjunctive task, in most tasks there is going to be one part that is more difficult than all the rest, if these projects are assigned then the member who gets the hardest part is considered to be the weakest link because they are holding the group back from completing the task as a whole. It is not their fault that their part of the task is more difficult, this is just how a conjunctive task is, however…

Dweck talks about how group failure isn’t acceptable, you have to learn from your mistakes. Going back to my high school years, there was a major point where I would stress myself over the school work. I was taking 9 periods at that time I wouldn’t get out until 9, so when I would get home I didn’t have time to really work on anything. The night classes I was taking were CNA classes which took a lot out of me because I had packets to do that were due the next day, on top of that I had my other school work. All my teachers including my mom noticed that I needed support so they were there encouraging me to never give up until the objective was done, until I felt like it was enough.…

    • Bringing instruction back to the whole class after grouping allows the class to construct a “big picture” of the material using information that was worked out in the smaller groups. It allows each group to contribute to overall classroom understanding, and prevents lower-level groups from feeling inadequate or like they haven’t completed meaningful work. How can you prevent students who may be in a lower level group from feeling inferior? • Being sure to give student assignments that meet the same objectives as their classmates and assigning “respectful tasks” can keep students from feeling like they are left behind. Praising progress and student accomplishments before offering critical feedback will show them that you are focused on their capabilities, not just their shortcomings.…

The North Dakota Association of Honor Society has four criteria that all members should possess and applicants must meet all four to be inducted: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Since I have been given the opportunity to fill out the application for the Honor Society and write this essay, I clearly have demonstrated skill in the Scholarship area. However, that still leaves three other areas. First is the area of Leadership. I have been entrusted by my peers to serve in various leadership positions both in the school and through other activities that I am involved with, which range from Class President to serving as a member of the school's Peer Leader Team.…

I learned quickly that you must support yourself mentally in order to provide for others. In one activity, we had to create a project to present to the class, and my group was the first one to go. We had no examples to base our ideas off of, so our group was working individually, but trying to push our individualism all together. I knew that we needed to work together in order to create a project worth presenting. We began by asking for each person's ideas and their plans on how the project should go, and we all learned that we may have had different ideas, but our main goal was all the same; to create an interactive presentation that a class would enjoy.…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

I like Susan Cain also believe that people skills are essential to our lives; however, I believe having a strict rule on group brainstorming restrains introverts from creating something magnificent in their moments on isolation. Susan Cain points out the importance of giving introverts their space in her essay “The Rise of the New Groupthink.”…

Social interaction in the classroom will lead to an advancement in my students’ cognitive development (Vygotsky. 1978. pp 56-57). I believe in the Jigsaw method (Aronson, E. & Patnoe, S. 1997), as a way to incorporate group work into my classroom. Cooperative learning enhances student learning and achievement (Korkmaz Toklucu, S., & Tay, B. 2016). While I will have lectures in my classroom, I plan to incorporate frequent class discussions, in which my students build off of each other’s ideas and learn from one another.…

It was the first time the emphasis was placed on the group, not in the individual abilities and skills. Adapting to others personalities and putting differences aside to function as a whole was the key to success. I learned my individual strengths, became confident in them, and used them to learn how to lead. But, I remained humble with my weaknesses and deferred them. Our group faced some unique struggles in respect to this project. We had a serious conflict, but were able to resolve everything and become a succinct and cohesive group afterward. I truly believe that if we had not gone through the aforementioned conflict, we would not have been successful as a group. Our group development very closely followed Tuckman’s stages of group development: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning (Rust, 2015).…
