Prison reform is a significant issue for many Americans. The prison population is expanding at a phenomenal rate, often beyond the capacity of the existing system to accommodate the swelling ranks of the incarcerated.
Problems
The first problem of the California prison systems is the major overcrowding in prisons. California has one of the most dysfunctional and problematic prison systems. Over the last thirty years, California prisons increased tremendously. The California Department of Correctional and Rehabilitation does little in their power to provide help for prisoners that they need and serve as human warehouses rather than a correction institution.
The second problem of the California prison systems is recidivism. Recidivism is the return to prison after committing a new crime. In the contemporary society, prisoner reentry and recidivism has posed a challenge. After the reintroduction into the society, there is no guarantee that there will be no relapse. Statistics has it that the rate of recidivism in California is approximately 65%. Recidivism is problem that directly affects the lives of the working poor class, and the working middle class. Recidivism is problem that directly affects the lives of the working poor class, and the working middle class. Society needs to reevaluate our disposition and see how this issue, that continues to be a burden on us can remedied.
