The world we live in today is full of poverty stricken people. The real question is does a poverty stricken family affect the children. Children are like sponges and absorb everything around them. Whether it be words or actions they are watching a learning. If a household is poverty stricken this may affect your child as well. As a result of poverty, children may lack social skills, miss learning opportunities, are less likely to go to college, may be more prone to substance abuse, more susceptible to illness, may have abusive characteristics, and may have more survival skills. A child in poverty may not fit in and may lack social skills. Social skills are a very important role in a child 's life. Without them they may feel lonely or depressed. Without social skills they lack the ability to make friends and have fun. They need social skills in school for any reports or projects they may have to do. They also need social skills for when they get older. They need social skills if they want to find a significant other. They may not live in a clean environment because the parents may not be able to afford one. A child’s immune system is weaker than an adults and should be protected. Children need to be in a clean environment to be healthy. If they live in a run down town and are not protected from the harmful pathogens, than that may cause a serious health condition. They may not have the cleanest water, and anything that the child takes in could harm them. Children also may go hungry. If parents cannot afford to buy food they may only get one meal a day, and that is not enough nutrition for a child. Without enough nutrition this could prevent an unhealthy physical development.
