The Problem Of Overpopulation

Decent Essays
Over population is actually a problem that many countries across the world are currently dealing with. Across the world countries such as China, United States, and Japan over population is a growing problem. In a country like China the problem becomes a bigger issue when there are limited resources to supplement the growing population. As I read and learned more about overpopulation I came across a very good article that explained in detail the problems with overpopulation and how it really is a problem, within the article we are able to learn about other countries, countries that we are aware that their population is constantly growing and causing a problem, but then I also came across with the issues that the united states is dealing with, …show more content…
We learn the difference between a community and a population. Although we did not cover specifically the topic relating to human population it does give us a visual aid of what a population is to understand the terms under and over. It does just not relate to that topic but the fact the we are able to understand that if a country is overpopulated with humans, we have to think about the animals as well, this planet is just not our home it 's the home to several species. So overpopulation does not only affect us. In one of the articles that I read I came across a certain statement that really caught my attention, we are constantly cutting out our trees and forest in order to build supermarkets or apartment complexes, so living areas are starting to look bigger than pasture areas. Trees are a form of life and the issue with overpopulation also affects them as well because we massively tear them down for the sole purpose or benefiting our …show more content…
Over population is certainly a problem that affects certain countries more than others, in countries such as China, over population has become a big issue, and that explains the law as to why they can only have one children and they have to pay a fine for additional children. This at some point sounds inhumane but it is the method that China is using to balance their very overpopulated country. Why should a country decide such thing you may ask yourself, but many of us have to understand that resources play a big role in trying to control the population, as stated in one of the articles that I read, “Overpopulation is rapidly depleting the earth 's resources.” (Wooldridge, Frosty) As humans one of our goals as mankind is to reproduce, but how do we carry on with reproducing when our generation is slowly depleting our resources. We need to balance everything out; making every country do the same thing China is doing is of course not the correct way to approach every country but people in countries that are very over populated should understand that resources are limited. Effects on our Environment Explanatory Synthesis In the articles “Overpopulation Is Not the Problem” by Erle C. Ellis, “Overpopulation Is Not the Problem? Really?” By Robert Walker, “Overpopulation Is Still the Problem” by Alon Tal and “The Overpopulation Myth” by Fred Pearce each author discusses the issue of overpopulation and how it has become a debate among many as to whether it really is as big of an issue as some may think. A recent example is China, which has been experiencing overpopulation since the 1970’s. In 1979, the Chinese government actually began issuing methods, such as the “one child per family” policy, to help combat the issue. Even though many methods have been attempted since that time, none of them have had much success. China’s population today hangs at 1.2 billion citizens, which is nearly 21% of the entire population of Earth. China is an example of how quickly a country can become overpopulated and how difficult it is to combat the issue.…

“Overpopulation in various countries has become a serious threat to the health of people and a grave obstacle to any attempt to organise peace on this planet” - Albert Einstein. Imagine you're inside a train that is so crowded people are almost bursting out the windows and the doors. This is what the population density in some parts of the world is like and this could be Canada soon. There are 7 billion people in the world, with approximately 1.2 billion in India and 1.3 billion in China. It may not seem that Canada is in danger with its population of 35.16 million, but that may not last for long.…

America's growing population is becoming a serious dilemma, with the problems of not enough fossil fuels, food and space to keep everyone healthy and happy. Currently in America we have over 325,187,419 people and if we don't do something quick then we will not have enough room for people to live or enough food to eat (“U.S. Population (LIVE”). Many more problems will arise due to population growth, for instance many people will become homeless due to everything getting more efficient, especially with scientists creating more machines to do tasks for us. Most won't have enough jobs and many people will not be able to care for their families. Resources will run out sooner than later, not just in the United States but everywhere and what will we do.…

The prominent philosopher Thomas Malthus addressed sustaining our resources in his essay, An Essay on the Principle of Population. Malthus proposed that human population would grow faster than our resources; our resources are limited and, therefore, we cannot sustain the population. Malthus himself writes, “to meet the needs and aspirations of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (552). Basically, Malthus is warning us that we need to find a way to control overpopulation, so we have enough resources for the future…

In our crowded world, there are many people who are living good lives while two thirds of the population are living a poor life. Through Lifeboat Ethics: the Case against Helping the Poor written by Garrett Hardin (1974) it explains how there are many dangers of overpopulation through the world. Hardin goes into detail about how overpopulation and having different population’s causes for an unequal resource need.
