Power Of A Lie Essay

Superior Essays
Today thousands of tall tales are told. “One lie has the power to tarnish a thousand truths.” (Goodreads.com). By telling one lie we are diminishing the power of the truth. What is the point in lying? Does it make people feel better about themselves? Does it make others feel more popular? In order to find the answer to these questions you have to take a deeper look into lies told by individuals that have impacted their life greatly. These have a greater impact on those who observe a lie being told. There are several examples of lies told today by people who are trying to make themselves look more important such as the lies told by Rosie Ruiz, Diane Downs, and Steve Rannazzisi.
Rosie Ruiz lied to many people starting with “running” a marathon

Rosie Ruiz for example, cheated in running the Boston marathon. I have lost trust in her because since I am a runner I respect the and admire the person that wins the Boston marathon because that is a big deal and something to look up to, and she told a fib which made me stop trusting in her. A second example would be Diane Downs. Diane Downs lied about shooting her own three children. This has caused me to stop believing in public figures because shooting kids is a big deal and if you were being blamed for shooting kids it would be a hard thing to deal with and just because she didn’t want to go to jail she lied and that’s not the right thing to do. A final example of why I have lost trust in public figures would be because of Steve Rannazzisi. Steve Rannazzisi lies about surviving the Twin Towers attack on 9/11. This has lead me to lose trust in public figures because the attack on 9/11 was a big deal that left many people all around the world heart broken, and not many survived so surviving it would be a big deal and is not something to lie about just to make you look good. As I have said, I have lost trust in public figures because of poorly made decisions that others have

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

In the essay The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson, she mentions on how she discovered that telling the truth all the time is nearly impossible because it would be living with some serious consequences. Throughout the history of the United States and other parts of the world, a high percentage of people tend to not be able to tell the truth when they are asked simple questions by members of their family or by their close friends. As telling the truth may have consequences, telling lies may have deeper consequences that cannot only hurt the person telling the lie, but it can affect the person being lied to. Being known as a liar can cause problems in a relationship because it will bring on trust issues and can also cause one’s partner to overthink…

Stephanie Ericsson, in “The Ways We Lie,” a cover article from a 1993 issue of the Utne Reader, references life experiences, classifications, and quotes to rationalize the human need to lie. A lie is like an eclipse covering the sun. The lie affects everything that it touches; it can cause crops to die from not sunlight, like people can die without truth. However the truth will eventually come out, and the crops will right themselves, but people cannot. Sometimes a bad truth is better than a good lie. Like the sun behind the moon the truth will eventually come out for all to see, and it is better to come out when it is discovered rather than someone having to pry to get it out.…

Molly Gaglione UCWR 110 - 012 Professor Jaffe 4 October 2017 The Use of Rhetoric as a Persuasive Device in “The Ways We Lie” In the world today, lying is something that is seemingly unavoidable. Religious leaders lie to hide illegal crimes committed within the church; athletes lie about use of performance enhancing drugs; news stations lie about the credibility of their reports; the President of the United States even lies about the number of people who attended his inauguration; more commonly, however, an average person will commit an untruth over the course of their daily lives, whether it be necessarily known to them or not. These are the kinds of lies that are explored in Stephanie Ericsson’s “The Ways We Lie.” This article dives into…

Most lies told are for the purpose of protecting one’s reputation. As seen in The Crucible, many main characters lie in order to protect their reputation. According to David J. Ley, Ph.D., most people who constantly tell lies “are often worried about losing the respect of those around them. They want you to like them, be impressed, and value them. And they’re worried that the truth might lead you to reject or shame them”…

    1. According to Ericsson, we all lie because we want to avoid confrontation, spare people’s feelings, and to get out of particular situations. To avoid confrontations, sometimes it is necessary to lie, for example, if you were talking about someone behind their back and they hear about it, you are going to deny that you ever talked bad about that person to avoid getting into an alteration. If someone is wearing an ugly outfit that they are real proud of, you are most likely going to lie to them by telling that someone that you love their outfit just to avoid hurting their feelings.…

As children we were taught the good and the bad. We were taught to be good with others, to say please, and thank you, but more than anything to be honest. One of the biggest most unacceptable matter was to lie. Lies And Deception Essay

Lying and deception is one of the most common sins that we see in law enforcement according to our ethic book. This is one of the sins that can easily be made, and most would see as not a very big sin depending on what an officer is lying about. A person of the law should never lie but some examples can be when a civilian reports an officer doing something they shouldn’t of done like speeding or turning their lights on to get through a light just so they don’t have to wait. Now when this gets reported an officer could easily lie and say he or she didn’t do this because there is most likely no evidence of this being done and it’s the officers word against the civilians. Now that is just a simple example of how an officer could lie to a leader or their department.…
