Personal Narrative: The Health Care System

Improved Essays
Our health care system in this country is a joke! First of all, the title is misleading because healthy people don 't need doctors and medicine. They should rename it to sick care, because that 's what this industry is. It 's filled with sick people, looking for help from the "experts" only to get shoved pills that don 't work, get their symptoms masked, and get procedures they don 't need all so the industry can profit. A client of mine is a hospital administrator at a large hospital and we were having a discussion about why hospitals are so expensive and he summed it up like this, "medicine is a business, just like any other industry. It 's all about maximizing a profit". My dad taught me at a young age that medicine is not about health, …show more content…
First thing, the hospital charged me 3,000 dollars for the doctor to just refer me to an orthopedic doctor. I saw the doctor for literally 2 minutes. During the 2 minutes this doctor said I needed high blood pressure medication and said I needed it for the rest of my life. I was 26 years old at the time, I 'm like this woman sounds crazy. She didn 't ask me about my lifestyle or anything, just wrote me a prescription because my blood pressure was elevated. The worst part about it, my blood pressure was elevated as a result from how swollen my ankle was (I was tested again a month later after my ankle healed up and tested perfectly). After getting examined, I was told I would be in the cast for 2 months. I refused to be in a cast that long and made my appointment for the following month. I took a holistic approach to healing my ankle and it worked. What did I do? The opposite of what the doctor said. He said to rest and not do too much activity, I didn 't miss one workout. I was told not to lift anything heavy, I lifted heavy with my upper body in the weight room and dragged a sled with my one good leg. I was told to take Ibuprofen for the swelling, instead I didn 't touch any medication and ate pineapple 's, a lot of green vegetables, and Omega 3 fats for the swelling. I also didn 't touch caffeine, alcohol, or dairy. As a result the bone was fully healed in half the time the doctor …show more content…
Fed Up followed the families of obese children and their struggle to get healthier. One child, in particular, was severely overweight and his doctor recommended this child get gastric bypass surgery, which is a very harsh surgery with little success rate. His "health" insurance agreed to pay 10,000 dollars for this procedure. His parents agreed to the surgery and initially he lost 50 pounds. Then a year later he put the weight right back on. Now if this doctor and insurance company really cared about this child 's health they would 've taken a completely different approach. 10,000 dollars would have been enough money for him to pay for a personal trainer, meal prep, and a ride to the gym every day. These professionals would 've provided a 1-year plan of exercise and diet, and would 've educated the parents on how to support their son during this plan. Not only would this child have lost weight with this approach, he would 've gotten his health back in order, in addition to developing the necessary habits to keep losing weight and keep the weight off. The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…
