Carbon Sequestration Of Fossil Fuels

Our current problem, global warming caused by the growing amount of emissions, can no longer be swept under the rug. As we all know, global warming is caused by carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere. But, now there is a possible solution of burying it deep underground or beneath the ocean. The burning of fossil fuels poses a great threat to rising sea levels, stronger storms, and agricultural disruptions. Most importantly the global temperature level rising. Humans are in risk with carbon dioxide being emitted to the atmosphere daily. There is no simple solution to removing carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere. Fossil fuels are one of the most essential source to power our daily needs. Although, renewable energy is emerging to reduce global …show more content…
The method of carbon sequestration already has some key parts. The chemical system is currently being used in some facilities such dry ice manufacture and beverage carbonation. This brings the idea that the same approach be used towards coal-burning electric power plants. The smokestacks could be replaced with absorption towers. The first tower can separate the carbon dioxide from the other gases such as water vapor and nitrogen to absorb it. The second tower would separate the carbon dioxide from the absorbing chemicals, which would allow for the absorbing chemicals to be returned to the first tower for reuse. When the burned coal is done with oxygen rather than air it would allow for it to be much easier. It would be mixed only with water vapor, not nitrogen. Which would allow for the water vapor to be condensed, leaving pure carbon dioxide gas that can be stored away safely for …show more content…
If the carbon dioxide is stored underneath the ocean, there is going to be many more problems. If a leak occurs after the certain limit has been reached the carbon dioxide would spread into the ocean. This would affect the organisms and the organism’s habitat. Soon now we would have a much bigger environmental problem. After the carbon dioxide has manifested into the ocean water it would still be entering the atmosphere. Now we would be left with trillions of stored carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and pose a great threat to the ocean’s organism’s habitat. Another possible way to use the carbon sequestration is by using it on automobiles. Cars play a major role in burning fossil fuels. To travel, we use cars daily burning many tons of carbon daily around the world. Just like I mentioned earlier by using two pipes for coal-burning electric power plants, we can prevent from the carbon dioxide emitted from all the cars go into the atmosphere. There could be new cars made with two pipes to prevent the chemicals from going into the

Scientists remain on the search for the answer to just how much human interference has played in the recent warming period. Since the industrial revolution, scientists have discovered “that production of electricity using coal and petroleum, and other uses of fossil fuels in transportation and industry, affects our environment in ways we did not understand before.” The dramatic increase of carbon dioxide and methane, gasses that absorb heat, in the atmosphere has a direct correlation to the rise in temperatures, making it more obvious that humans are contributing to global…

As another pivotal issue, Flannery put forward the idea of third way technology which strengthens the Earth’s natural regulatory system of CO2 absorption out of the atmosphere. Accordingly, Flannery has suggested a wide range of technological methods that can be used as successful ways of decarbonizing processes. The significance of this method is this enables the enhancement and restoration of the process of Carbon withdrawal, while at scale out of the ocean as well as the earth’s atmosphere in order to maintain the balance of greenhouse gases. Moreover, according to Flannery the base of this method is, initially CO2 soaking up and then stored as the carbon in different forms, which are range from living forests to charcoal, plastics and stored…

The mid-water and deep of ocean represent the main reservoir for carbon dioxide, as well as longer-term absorbed basin. However, the surface layer of the oceans play a critical role in the carbon cycle, where carbon dioxide is exchanged continuously along the air-sea interface due to different partial pressure of the gas. And with increasing carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere because of human source activities, greater amounts of this gas dissolved in the surface layer of the…

Like I have said in a previous assignment, I thought I was already helping the environment to decrease carbon dioxide emissions with my usage of long-lasting fluorescent bulbs in my home and in my apartment for college. However, though this is a good start for a single individual, it will only help to make an impact on CO2 level if more people start to use these environmentally helpful and responsive lightbulbs rather than traditional incandescent bulbs. Another way that we could further decrease global warming from occurring would be to start decreasing the number of gasoline based vehicles and increase the usage of alternatives like hybrids and hydro-powered vehicles with are environmentally friendly. While this would not decrease the amount of vehicles on the road, as it is not likely that humans will stop driving their own cars to get place to place, they should instead try to convert their vehicles to environmentally safe…

Earth is covered in approximately 71% water, 97% off all Earth’s water is found in oceans which provide for life on earth. Oceans are important because they provide over half of all oxygen in the atmosphere, but also absorb large amounts of gasses from the atmosphere. Unfortunately oceans are under the constant threat of not just overfishing or pollution, but mainly acidification which damages delicate ecosystems greatly. Ocean acidification is caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, either created by human emissions, or by natural causes. When carbon dioxide dissolves into water it can react with water molecules to form carbonic acid (H2CO3).…

With every second that passes by we deal with an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. The greenhouse effect has become a consensus among scientist around the world, and the need to control this issue has garnered lots of talks. The United States is a country in need of having to analyze this situation very carefully as it falls under the second highest producer of carbon dioxide. Although this is a problem in which all countries should unify to combat it effectively; the U.S. should take initiative and begin implementing ways to control the amount of carbon dioxide they emit into the atmosphere. One way the United States can do this is by imposing a carbon tax.…

    I. Introduction One of the most important issues within the field of environmental protection is the issue of discovering a way of properly regulating carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning power plants. Carbon dioxide is primarily produced as a byproduct of combustion of fossil fuels in power plants in order to provide heat to turn water into steam, that can drive the turbines that create electricity. According to the Environmental Protection Agency in 2012, humans produced 5,400 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and power plants produced 38 percent of the total carbon dioxide produced. Therefore, there is currently a debate whether to tax the carbon dioxide that is being released by power plants or should we look for another alternative to control the release of excessive amounts of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere.…

As the amount of anthropogenic CO2 has been rising in the atmosphere, this has meant a natural rise in the levels of CO2 in the oceans. This rise can have a large effect on the natural biogeochemical cycles of the oceans. The largest effect will be seen through the acidification of the oceans. When CO2 is dissolved in seawater it increases the concentration of hydrogen ions in the ocean, which then decreases the overall pH, causing acidification. This acidification can have a detrimental effect on marine biota through two main mechanisms: hypercapnia and the dissolution of calcium carbonates.…

Since the beginning of the industrial era carbon dioxide or CO2, concentrations have been dramatically increasing. Today we are facing the highest amounts of CO2 in our atmosphere and in our oceans in over 650,000 years. There are a great deal of effects increased CO2 concentrations will have on this planet. When the ocean absorbs CO2 chemical reactions occur that eventually reduces their pH, carbonate ion concentration, and saturation states of important calcium carbonate minerals. This is known as ocean acidification and with the altering of saturation states coral reefs around the world have suffered a great impact because of this.…

Human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and using transportation are the main causes which rapidly accelerate climate change. However, such problems can be controlled and dealt with by making an effort to implement renewable energy and conserve energy as mentioned and the sequestration of carbon dioxide. Thermal power generation burning fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas has been used to produce electric energy.…
