More than half of the girls married underage come from poverty stricken families. It is sad to hear that girls that come from the poorest families feel as if getting married, no matter the age, is the only option for them in order to have a semi-good life. It is ironic though because most ‘families’ that come out of child marriages end up in poverty. Marriage to families in the poor developing countries is not looked at as a sign of ‘love’ like it is in the United States. Marriage there, is looked at as a way to reduce family expenses. Families marry off their daughters, and then invest in their sons education. They feel it is better for the son to be educated because he will be the one to provide for his family one day. Sometimes marriages of the daughter is even used to repay debts, manage disputes, and also settle social, political, and economical alliances (Girls Not Brides).
