Essay On Myself In Social Work

Improved Essays
When putting myself into this situation as a social worker I really feel for how hard there job really is. First, I just want to say that all these situations deserve the money and it’s a shame that these things really happen and we have to choose and people that need help get left out. With that being said I felt the one that had the least amount of downfalls and concerns was the dispossessed urban family. There was a lot of thought into this, I has having a hard time deciding between the dispossessed family and the one about myself needing the money. I feel as if a lot of people would choose to look out for their selves instead of the other options. This being such an opinionated question and everyone has different feelings towards different situations. For instance, I believe a good contemporary approach for opposing my view would be the Views of Caring. I say this because a big part of that is “Take on one’s personal problems and burdens as your own, even when you have to act against your own desires and interests” (Chapter 3 PowerPoint). When picking the option I did, I didn’t put myself into the shoes of all the others, I choose the one that I thought would help the future the most and the one I thought was beneficial to ones around the situation. But once I start putting myself into the actual situations of these people I really start to see my views change. Another contemporary approach that could be used to oppose my views is the Virtue ethics. I say this because “One does the right thing based upon virtues learned from youth – justice, courage, generosity, temperance, gentleness” (Chapter 3 PowerPoint). This is one that I think is a great example to oppose anyone’s views that doesn’t pick the option of your father needing a heart transplant. I say this because when you’re growing up you see that family is always there for you and learn to love them unconditionally forever. So for me not to pick my own father, the man who raised me is

After years of working in the Social Services field, I felt that my heart needed a hiatus from the gut wrenching circumstances in which many of the families I assisted found themselves in. I could no longer bear the responsibility of a child’s life in my hands due to the bureaucracy and conditions that plagued many of the people in my caseload. The stress of such an endeavor was affecting my health. I still wanted to be helpful and to try to make a difference in peoples’ lives but not at the expense of my own. I took some time off to reflect on what my next step would be and to be more available to my youngest child whom was entering the third grade at a different school.…

I am seeking admissions to the social work program this fall. There are many reasons why I have chosen social work as my major. First, I have always had a passion for working with people. My dream job has always been to be a juvenile probation officer; however, I also like the idea of working for a non-profit organization to help battered women; that leads to my second reason why I chose social work for my major. I have always thought of myself as an advocate for women, and I would presume that has a lot do with me being raised by a single mother.…

Lacking direction and displaying what outsiders described as “wasted potential” I made my way through my senior year of high school with little motivation to graduate. During this time my father was deployed with the United States Air Force to Afghanistan and it distracted my focus from my academic studies to closely following the US military involvement oversees. Midway through my senior year I had reached the conclusion that I had zero aspirations to receive higher education at that point in time. Undecided and undetermined, I didn’t want my parents to waste their money paying my way through school if I didn’t have a clear end state in mind.…

Social work is a professional occupation and academic discipline that focuses on improving the quality of life for individuals, couples, families, groups and communities. A more general definition of social work is that it is a career in which individuals are given the professional tools to help others. There aren’t many careers that allows one to help others in the way that social work does. If it wasn’t for a social worker, and my father, I wouldn’t have crossed paths with my two foster brothers and one young man living in a group home facility.…

The readings this week covered a great deal of information. In readings form the book by Murphy and Dillion, Interviewing in Action in a Multicultural World, a wide range of working with clients was discussed from ethical standards and dilemmas to confidentiality to endings and transitions to self-care for the clinician to ongoing education (Murphy and Dillon, 2011). In between all of this, was, again, stressing the importance of empathy, cultural and ethnic differences, and making sure, as a social worker, you are addressing and understanding, your clients’ needs and wants. In the writing from Homan, the discussion was about how planning is so important to make change happen and how a person needs to be prepared to make changes to the…

As social workers, we are faced with the incredible task of helping people-predominantly people of color-to navigate the country’s systems in search for better opportunities and resources in an attempt to improve their lives. Not only do we have to take into account the individual’s past experiences and current skills and concerns but most importantly we have to be able to see each individual as an intricate puzzle which contains many different pieces that have all come together to form what that person is today. One of the most crucial factors that we must take into account is the person’s identity, how the person relates to that identity within several different contexts and how this individual has either succeeded or failed to access necessary resources in their community. In addition to that, we must know what types of experiences this individual has had in the past to identify strengths and weaknesses whereby we, as social workers, can use to help the individual accomplish their set goals.…
