At the age of seventeen, I saw my friend get backhanded by her boyfriend simply because he wanted to leave a concert and she wanted to take a picture with the band. My night was ruined by what I witnessed, but more so my life and hers were changed that night. She went on to marry this boy that within a few months of dating had become abusive and controlling. Our lifelong friendship was cut short because in what turns out to be a typical move, the abuser isolated her from those that loved her and would have protected her from him. Years later, I discussed the incident with my mother, who to my surprise was not surprised at all. In the field of domestic violence, a woman who breaks away from her abuser and enters the workforce contributes not only to her family but also set a good example. Social Workers assist victims of domestic abuse with their educational pursuits. The community, the economy, and the family also benefit from this. Social Workers in school settings also have an impact in the local, national, and even global economy. The main duties of a Domestic Violence Social Workers range from office duties such as maintaining paperwork for the various cases assigned to the individual, to providing victims with education and counseling tools. Domestic Violence Social Workers work closely with the community. Often, victims of domestic violence are in need of housing and medical assistance. Social Workers maintain communications between housing authorities and hospitals for referrals and emergency assistance. Social Workers will go as far as assisting with job hunting and referrals when helping victims of domestic violence get back on their feet.
