At the age of seventeen, I saw my friend get backhanded by her boyfriend simply because he wanted to leave a concert and she wanted to take a picture with the band. My night was ruined by what I witnessed, but more so my life and hers were changed that night. She went on to marry this boy that within a few months of dating had become abusive and controlling. Our lifelong friendship was cut short because in what turns out to be a typical move, the abuser isolated her from those that loved her and would have protected her from him. Years later, I discussed the incident with my mother, who to my surprise was not surprised at all. It is somewhat ingrained in our culture, that men have the upper hand and that women somehow do not have a way to get out of it. My mind was made up those many years ago, that I wanted to help women who wanted to leave a domestic abuse situation, and that needed outside help to accomplish it. Becoming a Social Worker, with a focus on domestic violence is the career that I have chosen.
“Social Workers help people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. One group of Social Workers, clinical Social Workers, also diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues” (DLS 2014) According to the United States Department of Labor, the job outlook for a Social Worker is at 19% from 2012-2022, this is at a faster rate than average.
