Personal Narrative: Once Upon A Child

In August of 2011, I was eleven; my older sister Kyle, 18 at the time, was arrested with six felony charges: three theft and three check fraud. Over the past year, she had been stealing money and forging checks: cashing them and getting money to support her drug addiction. In October, she was released to a halfway house in Elizabeth and stayed there for 90 days. Later, in 2012, she was arrested again for the same charges. At that time I was thirteen and barely understood why my sister would do this. I was aware she had a drug problem, but I didn’t necessarily understand what that meant. It was obvious everything had either been sold or traded for money or drugs. They had a car seat; it was long expired. There were a few articles of clothing, but they were nasty, used, and falling apart. We were able to recover some of the things from Once Upon A Child: we needed to buy many of the essentials again. After their lies began to be exposed, the guardianship court couldn’t have come soon enough.
My parents and Kyle’s mom and stepdad went to guardianship court on September 16, 2015. After 45 minutes, the judge had come to an agreement on the terms of visitation and parental rights. We won joint-guardianship and Kyle and Eli were allowed visitation three times a week. Within four hours of court letting out, Kyle and Eli were arrested in Jefferson County for heroin possession.
Before Addylyn was even three months, her parents have had over ten felonies and fourteen misdemeanors between them. These included drug possession, shoplifting, theft, and paraphernalia. Kyle has been arrested four times, but was never held longer than seven days. Eli was arrested three times and is currently serving time with two other counties with warrants after he is released. Police are still permitted to search for drugs, but drug possession is considered a misdemeanor if it is found on a person in a ten day supply or less; the person can be fined and will be ordered to see a form of a drug addiction counselor; the charge is similar to a parking ticket-- a fine without a criminal record. If a person is found with more than a ten day supply, they are considered a drug dealer and legal action will be taken.
