Experiencing conflict can be heart wrenching, and difficult to adjust to. We all want conflict to come to an end eventually, however the fact that people keep conflicts going, sometimes over the course of years, is the indicator that some system function is served by conflict (Hocker and Wilmot pg. 225, 2014). For individuals such as my mother and my father conflicts appear to arise more often than not. Experiencing conflicts more than happiness in a relationship can become detrimental, and begins a point of constant pain and emotional distress. For relationships such as the ones that my parents had can contain numerous types of conflict that can be experienced, as well as a point within the relationship where the conflict appears to never …show more content…
During conflict between men and women it has always been stereotyped that men are those of the stronger gender, and women are the more sensitive and emotional position in the conflict. It would be considered abnormal if it were the men who were crying for forgiveness, because that is typically only the role of women (Tannen pg. 231, 2007). Even though my father was the essence of this conflict, in the end my mother was still the one asking for forgiveness and for things to be “perfect” again. Being in an intimate relationship with another human being exhibits our ability to handle conflict in it entirety. There are a variety of conflicts of which we deal with on a regular basis. When dealing with conflict in a love relationship it is a true assessment of our strength, ability, and desire to handle conflict, or if we allow it do become detrimental to our wellbeing. Allowing a situation such as the one my mother found herself in, made her go from being on with herself, to questioning herself and the desires in which she obtained. Since my mother was such a little girl her deepest desire was to obtain this “perfect” family, it is something that she strived so heavily for. She desired to please everyone, and perfect everything that to often she lost herself in the mix. “Although the reasons behind such secrecy vary across individuals, concern over anticipated social disapproval appears to be the strongest motivator” (Lehmiller pg.1453, 2009).
