The first stage is the precontemplation stage where a person is not considering change in the future. There are several reasons just as to why people may be in this stage because they are uninformed or under-informed about the consequences of their behavior. Also, an individual may have attempted to change several times and thus become demoralized about attempting once again. Overall, both classifications of people avoid reading, talking, or thinking about the consequences of their behaviors and are therefore unmotivated to change. Thus, in my example, some students may be aware of their bad drinking habits (perhaps they have gotten extremely sick due to drinking or even created bad images of themselves to others at parties) and are still reluctant to change.

The first method is the process of raising awareness about the causes, consequences, and cures for a particular problem. Thus, the first process is called consciousness raising. This process is intrinsic during the precontemplation and contemplation stages in aiding people with changing their bad behavior. This process can be utilized in my example by educating the MCPHS University student population about the consequences of alcohol abuse. A long with educating the students about alcohol abuse, I will also provide self-reflecting questions that the students can answer independently and come to their own realization of what their drinking habits are doing to their overall
