Films about musicians have potential for being very enjoyable. The plights of struggling artists, paired with some catchy tunes, can make for great cinematic experiences. They can be hilarious like ‘This is Spinal Tap’ or Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, or thoughtful like Crazy Heart or Inside Llewyn Davis. Either way, musicians can be great subjects for movies. One good example is ‘The Privates,’ a 2017 short film written and directed by Dylan Allen. With a runtime just under thirteen minutes, this science fiction comedy has been features at numerous festivals, including IFFBoston, the Brooklyn Film Festival, and the Palm Springs International ShortFest. It is like a combination of ‘Scott Pilgrim’ and ‘Fringe.’ By the end, you will want to see more of what this premise has to offer, perhaps in a feature-length film or an ongoing series.
The characters are a huge part of what makes this short film great. Each member of the Privates is fleshed out and likable. From the serious Max, to the cautious Ben, to the scientific Kep, to the eccentric Roka, all the characters leave an impact on the audience, and make people want to see what they will do next. The script allows for them to get a lot of laughs, and the four main actors provide spot-on
