With 1.15 billion of us on Facebook, it is clear that social media has become a major part of our daily lives. Over the past couple of years social media has become more and more popular with people of all ages. The internet, and social media in particular, is no longer a thing for the young and computer savvy. It is something that we now use every single day and is now an innovation that we simply could not live without. Recent studies reveal that four out of five smartphone users check their phones within the first fifteen minutes of waking up. The reason why we do this is simple: Social media is a great way to find out the latest news and stories quickly and easily. For example, it has become the preferred method of finding out about current affairs due to the viral nature of the internet. Some might question the reliability of things you read on the internet but then again how truthful are newspapers? One major story which questioned the reliability of newspapers was the closure of the tabloid the News of the World in 2011. The newspaper was found to have hacked 4000 people’s phones to extract information including politicians, celebrities and relatives of dead UK soldiers. Newspapers can often be one sided and people’s words are frequently twisted to make more money out of a story. Moreover, our phones are so useful to us that on average we use them to carry out an astounding 221 tasks each day.
