The Terry Fox Marathon of Hope has always interested me as to how someone could have gone through having cancer at such a young age and ultimately turn their situation into something so positive for others. As someone who has had cancer affect their family, Terry’s story has always impacted the way I view helping other people. I can recall in grade 2 when I participated in my first Terry Fox Run, which aims to raise money for cancer research and finding a cure. Since then I have seen Terry’s legacy live on. For instance, I have seen people participate year after year in the Terry Fox Run and families raise hundreds of dollars towards the organization.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

My grandfather did not want to disturb my studies so I was only told when he was already very ill, thus I felt was very important for me to spend his last moment by his side. It was during this time that I first began volunteering at the pediatric department of the hospital he was staying at. My grandfather’s cancer also spurred an interest in nonsurgical treatments of cancer that led me to shadow Dr. Simon Cheng, a radiation oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. In 2013, in the midst of multiple health issues, my mother was told that she might have breast cancer. Since my father was working in China, I took time off to be with her.…

Conclusion Understanding dying, death and bereavement, have been one of the most interesting subjects in my undergrad studies, even when learning about Psychology it is extremely interesting and exciting field knowledge, and knowing the main stages of learning, or how to differentiate between one learning disability to the other, it is one of the more important areas of Psychology, you will only have to deal with this concepts if you go into the area of clinical or behavioral psychology, but dying and death is something that we all have to deal with in one point or other in our lives, and by been able to understand it, and knowing how people react to this problem, to me is more fascinating that many other areas on psychology.…

The experience that has had the most profound affect on my life was when my mom battled cancer for the second time. I was in the second grade when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and at the time, I was unaware of how seriousness of her illness. As I grew through third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade, my understanding of the situation climbed drastically and I witnessed my mom fight on as the most brave individual I have ever met. It was difficult for me to watch my mother be so sick that for weeks at a time she could not get out of bed without help. It was in these dark times for my family that I learned how to be brave even when I don’t believe in myself and to keep your head up high and smile because I am not sure how much time I have…

I had volunteered in high school, and so began looking for volunteer opportunities in Boulder. Class #3 Readings: http://www.cns.nyu.edu/home/ledoux/overview.htm Emotion, Memory and the Brain, Trauma and PTSD Symptoms: Does Spiritual Struggle Mediate the Link? I especially enjoyed the exploration of brain activity and the effect the trauma can have on the brain this week. I think that the way the slides were organized were a great way to gradually expand on knowledge introduced in the readings, and slowly but surely increase the complexity of the ideas. While I am attempting to critically analyze the class, I really do think that the slides and concepts were laid out perfectly and connected well to the course content. The fact that each slide built another layer of information onto the main topic without making things to complex was easy to understand and therefor easy to learn.…
