The term Public relations is defined as a communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between a business and their publics it is often processed to influence public opinion. Most often done by communication between both groups of individuals whether it be a company or media coverage. The principles of public relations are founded by Arthur W. Page they are as follows; tell the truth, actions speak louder than words, always listen to the consumer, anticipate public relation and eliminate practices that cause conflict, public relations is a management and policy making function that impacts the entire company, and lastly keep a sense of humor, exercise judgment, and keep a cool head in times of crisis.

Comparable today great customer service goes a long way and keeps consumers coming back, to do this a person in PR must make good judgment calls and stay calm. Most often than not, people think these principles do not line up to our society today, however social media and technology have not changed the way public relations works, there is always scams and bad reputations occurring it is the firms job to help fix it, by doing so they need the six principles made by Page.

Some examples of this include; blogs and micro-blogs, video sharing, bookmarking applications, wikis, forums, and opinion sites as well as social networks (Papasolomou, Melanthiou, 2012). Along with all the great things that social media can do it also helps companies stay more interactive with their customers, it enables them to interact in an informal and more personal way rather than having a one way communication based website. With this being said, this adds to public relations because when dealing with companies it is crucial to have two way communications, and our society is finally allowing the internet to be an appropriate form of communication. In addition to this, it is a great marketing strategy for the reason that, it allows companies to share new products, interact with customers and sell themselves as a company. Public relations has a lot to do with this because without PR, social media would destroy companies with bad rumors and reputations would be ruined. Public relations and social media is all about trust and communication building furthermore, it’s about sharing information between two or more businesses. With more than a billion people using the internet public relations is the perfect strategy to get a brand across.
