Communication The principal of Gibsland – Coleman is an effective emerging leader. He is only in his second year of being an actual administrator. Prior to accepting the full - time position last year, the principal had been a classroom teacher at a larger inner-city Title I school in Shreveport, LA. Several of his administrative missteps were directly related to his inexperience as an administrator; however, many of the new ideas he attempted at Gibsland were potentially effective methods for fostering a positive school climate. A large criticism of Gibsland’s communication centers around the school’s willingness to provide consistent updates regarding school meetings, activities or programs. Most announcements are regarding faculty meetings or upcoming events are either impromptu or made the morning of over announcements. Gibsland’s previous principal was routine in sending out a memorandum and schedule for the upcoming week’s either on Friday or the upcoming Sunday. After receiving grievances from teachers regarding impromptu meetings, assemblies, or events, the principal has attempted to start sending weekly schedules; however, his frequency in sending out the schedule is inconsistent. The faculty meets at least once a month, but the meetings are typically negative in tone, vague in their message, and offer no concrete solutions to fix addressed concerns. At a macro level, there are visible signs of communication between certain staff members and administration at Gibsland – Coleman, but this communication does not pertain to school business, and is limited to specific small cliques. Nevertheless, even with an obvious lack of effective communication processes within the school’s culture, the students’ assessment scores show evident signs of effective instruction. The teachers do share a sense of shared responsibility in wanting to push Gibsland – Coleman’s students forward, more so through their actions than …show more content…
Yes, most schools under its umbrella are plagued by societal factor that impacts its students’ ability to learn, but not every school fits into this stereotype. The principal of Gibsland – Coleman constantly states that the school is really only categorized as Title I by its students’ lunch definition. Gibsland’s students perform well on their EOC and standardized exams due to their individual involvement in their education. Most students at Gibsland possess positive attitudes regarding the need for obtaining at least a high school education in today’s society. Behavior issues at Gibsland have seen a slight increase; however, majority of those issues are minor and are a result of immaturity. For instance, majority of the behavior issues at Gibsland either deal with social media, dress code, or tardiness. Rarely does a student commit a heinous act of disrespect towards a peer or adult. Many of the students enjoy their time at Gibsland and continue their support of the school well into
