Over the course of their long, 2,000 mile journey the armies survived by raiding and searching for food as they went along. Additionally, siege was laid “to castles and town walls” that they passed on their way. One of the most important sieges that took place was on the capital city of Nicaea for two weeks. Laying siege was slightly more difficult in the Islamic Empire than it would have been in Europe because the walls were stronger there. However, the Muslims in Nicaea still ended up surrendering and making a deal that they would let the Europeans take their castle as long as no one was hurt.…

If Hitler had been a better historian we would be speaking German now and Hitler’s soldiers could have avoided the inhuman suffering, described in ‘All Hell Let Loose’ by Max Hastings, had he studied the mistakes made by Napoleon 129 years earlier when he sent his ill equipped Grande Armée deep into the frozen heart of Mother Russia. History is more than just the study of the past; it allows us to understand the present and it also shapes the future. The imaginary exploits of the Sultan Saladin, as told to me by my grandfather, became fact when I read ‘The Crusades through Arab Eyes’ by Amin Maalouf as part of an extended research essay on the attempts of Muslim leaders of the 11th and 12th century to unite against the “Franj”. Having examined…

The only way to truly know anything is to be informed about it. No one knows about “their favorite television show” or “the best mall on Earth” until he or she learns about it by either hearing the news or reading about it. Once information is known; it always exists and sometimes changes lives. Although the idea of learning something new seems like a modern day idea, it is prevalent in nineteenth century literature as well. Chinua Achebe, the author of Things Fall Apart, uses the religious cultural collision between the European missionaries and African tribes and its effect on Nwoye to bring out a central theme of religion.…

Maalouf gives the example of Saladin, who conquered the Crusaders and took the Holy City. Unlike the Franj leadership, Saladin never killed soldiers he captured. Instead, he asked for ransom for him to release them, an act that shows how merciful the Arab leadership was. This is also an evidence that Crusader leadership did not care about peace. Saladin acted in kind in order to avoid further bloodshed.…

His response to the cultural collision caused by the Western was not negative like his father’s was, but positive. But every other person’s lives lead somewhere different.…

In Ibn al-Athir’s, The Capture of Jeruselum, he describes “when the Franks saw how violently the Muslims were attacking, how continuous and effective was the fire from the ballista’s and how busily the sappers were breaching the walls, meeting no resistance, they grew desperate.” Even though the Christians were desperate to find a plan they were rejected many times by the king. The Christians and the Muslim people had a rough time getting along because they had only heard the bad of what they were doing. They started to base their opinions of each other off of these stories which grew into even more hatred between the two. This is a great example of a single sided story because without the full truth neither side knew every detail of what was happening.…

The girls returned home and told their families what had happened but they were not believed. Later, however, when Nongqawuse described one of the men, her uncle Mhalakaza, himself a diviner, recognised the description as that of his dead brother, and became convinced she was telling the truth. As a result, between April 1856 and June 1857, the various sections of the Xhosa people of the Eastern Cape and the Transkei slaughtered almost all their enormous stocks of cattle and deliberately killed their crops.…
