The Price Of Salt Film Analysis

Director Todd Haynes brings the book “The Price of Salt” to life by creating the film Carol in 2015. This melodrama film brings to light in closet lesbian relationships and 1950s conformist America. Carol, a wealthy housewife divorcing her husband catches the eye of a young girl who works at a toy store. Carol’s character is the depiction of being “in the closet.” From the outside she looks like a wealthy, classy, woman who lives to please her husband and family. In actuality she is unhappy with her marriage and tries stay because of her husband, Harge, trying to take custody of their child. She secretly has affairs with a couple of women but no one even knows that part of her life. Unfortunately, her spouse starts to raise questions about her fitness as a mother when he realizes that Carol's relationships with her best friend Abby and Therese are more than just friendships. From the beginning of the film you can see that Harge doesn’t want to lose his wife and he constantly tries to work things out with Carol. However, she looks as if she is tired of living a double life and finally wants to be happy regardless of the consequences. At the end of the film, Carol finally gets the freedom that she wants but she has to pay a price by only by seeing her daughter twice a week. …show more content…
Haynes is known for making films 1950s family melodramas influenced by Sirk but incorporate current issues that were going on at that time. In his past film, Far from heaven he takes the plot of Sirks film All that haven allows and added issues such as racism and homosexuality. In this film, characteristics such as love, class, and gender roles is all exposed effortlessly throughout the film. His films showed the true reality of the world and expressed out loud the problems that society usually kept quiet
