Haiti relies heavily on aid from foreign governmental agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Haiti also counts on assistance from non-governmental organizations such as UNICEF.
In 2002, the CDC opened an office in Haiti with plans to address the issues concerning HIV/AIDS. Treatment and care for those already infected was one of the main goals in addition to prevention, especially from mother to child. As discussed earlier in this case study, the Bahamas has different organizations and departments that address different aspects of health including the Ministry of Health, Department of Public Health, and the Public Health Hospitals Authority. Each of these agencies has specific goals they are working to achieve but all provide healthcare services in some way. Also stated earlier, the Bahamas has its own organization to regulate pharmaceutical drugs. The National Drug Enforcement Authority has control over pharmaceutical distributor registration and the drugs they supply. A plan to improve access and cost of prescription drugs called the National Prescription Drug Plan provides coverage to retirees over 65, disabled citizens, youth under age 18, and full-time college students under 25. Eleven different illnesses are covered under this plan including diabetes and ischemic heart disease, two of the country’s leading causes of death. The Bahamian government has many policies in place that indirectly lead to high-quality health status. In the Bahamas, children ages 5 to 16 are required to be enrolled in school. Education is free and universal. The Department of Environmental Health Services has control over solid waste disposal and works toward maintaining sanitary living conditions.
