What makes a great leader? Is it the access to money, being raised in a wealthy household, being able to access certain achievements or just having access to the things you want? Most individuals believe that all those examples mention above will help shape a great leader, but that’s not true. Leaders have graced this earth from all sorts of demographics, whether rich, poor, lack of family wealth or simply having great leaders around to show a great example of a leader. There is no such thing as one being born to lead but certainly, one might take life experiences and frame themselves to be one of the world’s greatest leaders. According the Forbes article, Barack Obama: A Master Class in Public Speaking, that discusses three public speaking techniques that captivate his audiences; transcendence, repetition, gesture and voice. Transcendence allows President Obama to “transport us to another place and actually paint a portrait that we can see in our minds’ eye”. Being able to captivate and paint an image during a speech helps individuals dissect the messaged that he or she is trying to convey and also helps speaker become more relatable to the audiences. In the President’s victory speech from November 7th, Obama spoke using concrete details and spoke about the individuals that supported him and campaigned for him. For example, in his speech he stated. “you’ll hear the pride in the voice of a volunteer who’s going door to door because her brother was hired when the local auto plant added another shift” (Obama, Forbes, 1). Here Obama used descriptive language in order pant a specific picture using concrete and descriptive language. Secondly, is the use if repetition he uses in his speeches. Repeating a word or a phrase in a sentence helps to emphasize an idea make that idea memorable. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. speech, I Have a Dream. During the democratic national convention, he repeated the phrase “more to do for…” in order to emphasize on what society needs improve on to provide more of something or a particular set of individuals. Obama’s use of repetition shows how he “likes to group ideas into sets of three”, he does not overload is audience with a set of ideas, but carefully group them together to simplify his message.
