The guidelines of the President’s military and diplomatic powers has been set since our country began under the Constitution. The Framers of the Constitution believed in the need for the United States to have a strong military to protect the nation and its citizens. Therefore, they gave the title of “Command in Chief” to the President, which allows one civilian to lead the army in a unified manner. However, the Framers made sure to emphasize all check and balances of the President’s military power because they did not want any chance of a tyrannical military government; such as their former British government.
