The President of the United States is arguably the most respected and esteemed official in the world. Throughout the course of history the United States has had many great presidents and many not so great presidents. Extraordinary presidents are separated by certain qualities and characteristics. A great president possesses three qualities: leadership, good character, and patience. Leadership is directly defined as the action of leading a group but in the President of the United States this trait means so much more than just that. A president needs to lead the country with purpose, they need to be firm in their beliefs and plans for the country and remain unswayed by public opinion and ridicule. There is a huge difference between someone who just instructs people in the way they should go and someone who leads people with integrity and effectiveness. Lincoln exemplifies this trait in many ways but just one example is in his determination to fight for the 13th amendment even when he faced opposition. Getting the 13th Amendment passed was no small feat for President Lincoln. Many people told him that he would not get the Amendment passed within his presidency but he believed so strongly that slavery should be abolished that he would do everything in his power to make it happen. Trusted people in Lincoln’s cabinet were even doubtful that they would get the amendment passed and they even tried to encourage the president to give up, but Lincoln displayed great leadership by…
