1. The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life. What does Goffman mean when he says that life can be looked at "as if it were theater?" Do you believe this suggests that people have no authenticity or that they are insincere? Defend your answer.
Goffman say’s that life can be looked at “ as if it were theater?” because he believes that people change who they are depending on the situation. They alter themselves to fit in or to get people to like them. Goffman says there are “two kinds of communication expressions given and expressions given off” (McIntyre P140) I do not believe this extinguishes their authenticity or insincere.. It has been said "the clothes make the man"; however, the theme of Zimbardo's article is that sometimes "the role makes the [person]." Explain what this means within the context of Zimbardo's classic and controversial experiment.
Zimbardo’s believed that the role makes he person. He believed this because he conducted an experiment in which he put young adult men who were healthy, smart, normal, and no criminal record in a situation where they took on roles. Two different roles the guards, and the prisoners he chose this with a coin toss. After a few days he saw differences in the young adults behavior that was uncharacteristic to there nor mal beliefs and values. He came to the conclusion that the situation you are in determines the type of person you will become with no connection with your previous self.
3. "Getting" and "Making" a Tip. Diners may attempt to send a message to a waitperson by leaving no tip or very small tip. What do you think that intended message is?
