“The Presentation of Christ and The Flight into Egypt” was a famous panel of the Dijon Altarpiece. The Dijon Altarpiece was commissioned by a duke in Normandy, Philip the Bold. (Dijon Altarpiece (1394-99)) Broederlam’s job was to create vivid painting on both wings of the altarpiece. This essay will only be focusing on the right wing. The right panel portrayed two stories, one is the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, another one is Flight into the Egypt. Broederlam used different layers of rocks and grass to symbolize the far journey that Mary and Joseph had to travel because they were running away from Herod the Great. The shadow of the rocks and the road vividly present the layers, which represent the long journey, of rocks. The majority color of the mountain is dark. Broederlam used this way to depreciate two different scenes on the panel. Moreover, Broederlam also painted Mary on a donkey holding baby Jesus close by. The close relationship between Mary and Jesus were clearly shown on this panel. Jesus’ father Joseph is carrying all the belongings, and Broederlam drew Joseph drinking water to represent the tiredness he
