My love for reading and writing began at a young age, although, it was short lived. When I was in elementary school, I always looked forward to writing stories in my journal about the various topics my teacher created. I learned to read and write by sitting at a table in my living room, tracing the letters of the alphabet on a small piece of paper, and trying my best to pronounce the foreign letters in front of me. Reading has made me into the person I am today by allowing me to have many experiences in my life. I would say that I have become an excellent reader over the years.…

Literacy, the ability to read and write, is the foundation and general structure to learning as well as understanding any kind of information. In the words of Kofi Annan, “Literacy is…the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.” Being able to identify your literacy roots can be rather difficult, and incomprehensible. When seeking a single definition for literacy, one may find it to be nearly impossible as there is not just one, but many. Literacy, as I see it, has an extremely broad definition that solely depends on the interpreter. Literacy is the ability to read and evaluate content in a unique way of thinking, along with the aptitude to write and reflect upon a story, topic, or a piece of art. Throughout my life my literacy has evolved and changed into what it is today, a freshman in college writing 101. I believe that my attitude towards literacy can be best described by the path of reading from my adolescent and my high school years. This is when I discovered my likes and dislikes about how I was raised to comprehend reading and how it has affected me growing up and turned me into the literate person that I am today.…

Frederick Douglass once said “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free”, and in my specific case, I find that statement to be extremely true. Since I was a young child, I loved to read and sometimes I even tried to write little songs or stories, even if they weren’t good. The thing is though, that since then, a lot has changed. Books have changed, the people who write have changed, the way people in general look at literacy has changed and most of all, I have changed. Therefore I find it necessary to tell you all about my life as a reader/writer through a personal narrative all about my processes, habits, events, and audiences, that influence me to be the person I am today.…
