Although literacy’s denotation states that it is simply the ability to read and write, it can be expanded upon to include its immense impact on one’s social connections and ability to be successful in the world.
Ba-dum, Ba-dum, Ba-dum. My four year old heart raced as the moment I had been waiting for all day approached. I watched the clock in my bedroom closely as it crept towards nine pm. I took a deep breath and instantly took in the smoky scent of incense that my mother was burning in the kitchen downstairs. My father would always read stories to me when I was a child. Listening to his familiar voice recite compelling stories of fiction and fantasy easily transported me to the center of those stories. Learning to read came easily for me and I particularly fell in love with fiction books as a child. I often felt excited to read magical adventure stories like the Harry Potter and Pendragon series. Reading thick novels at such a young age helped me expand my vocabulary and literacy ability. My skills in English class were positively affected by my hobby of reading because I was able to read and comprehend writing at a skill level that surpassed my peers. My writing also was strengthened due to the new vocabulary that I learned through my readings. The more difficult the piece that I read, the more knowledge and reading prowess I took away from the experience. Looking up words I did not know became a habit and reading the passage again with a newfound sense of understanding helped me to I was able to think more critically on problems in my school work and extract the best possible solutions for them because of the constant reading that train my brain to think at a deeper
