For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you (NIV).
A cause and effect can be seen in verse 22. The cause is “you obeyed the truth”, which led to “you are purified and you will have sincere love for each other” and “you will love one another deeply, from the heart”. Peter used the word “agapaō” for love in the verb form. This simply refers to the love believers are supposed to have for one another.
Again, Peter refers to the fact that they were already believers, so their salvation was spoken of in the past tense. Verse 23 contains contrast and repetition where, again, Peter used the idea of perishable and imperishable things. This is also a metaphor where “perishable seed” refers to the things of man. Then the “but” gives some contrast to the other metaphor of the “imperishable”, which refers to the blood of Christ. Next, another cause and effect can be seen in the same verse.
