a linga which represents his fertility, the linga is conjoined with a yoni, and this representation of him is found in every Shiva temple (Danielou, 1984). But when he is not represented as a linga, Shiva is portrayed as a powerful being of human manifestation. In comparison, even though Shiva is most known for his phallic image, other phallic representations are present at other temples around the world, including some that pay homage to Dionysus. In the Greek representation, the phallus is represented as a pillar or column. In Orthos there is a pillar that directly represents Dionysus.
Besides the two gods being represented as phallic symbols, there are also other ways in which they are depicted. Shiva also has a popular image of him, in

A common representation of Dionysus is depicted by a bull. Sometimes Dionysus is depicted riding a bull, and other times just the bull itself can represent Dionysus. It is also said that Dionysus can manifest himself into figs and stones. In some depictions of Dionysus he also has a snake around his neck. Along with the various separate forms that the represent, Dionysus and Shiva share symbols that represent them both. One of the main animals that portray both deities is the bull. In the way that they are represented and worshipped is virtually the same. They both have cult followers, animal representations, multiple sides to their personalities and artistic qualities to their forms of worship, and they were both created from other powerful deities. There aren’t many differences between the two deities except for the different myths that are written about. The different cultures of India and Greece, have made their own distinctions for these two deities but the fundamentals are the same Shiva and Dionysus are versions of the same god that the people of India and Greece have taken the forms of these gods and have formed them to their own traditions and

The two sculptures, “Venus of Willendorf” and the Minoan snake goddess, are both similar and different in many aspects. They are both showing their breasts, which is considered to be a symbol of fertility. “Venus of Willendorf” is smaller than the Minoan snake goddess by about 10 inches because it was made to carry around, but the snake goddess wasn’t. They’re both seen as fertility figures, but I find that the snake goddess was seen as more powerful and stands tall, while Venus is more feminine and soft. They both begin the start of women depicted in art and fertility figures.…

Torso of Dionysos or Apollo is a freestanding marble sculpture depicting a nude male god and is currently on display at the Ackland Art Museum. An unidentified artist sculpted the work during the Roman Imperial period in the 2nd century CE, evoking a 4th century BCE Greek style. True to its name, Torso of Dionysos or Apollo is only a fragment of the original sculpture that depicted either Dionysos or Apollo. However, the work lacks enough distinguishing characteristics to accurately determine which of these gods the artwork represents. Only the sculpture’s torso remains, with the body being severed below the biceps and at mid-thigh.…

Battle Flag As I was scanning the topic list for another topic to write curiosity paper #3 on one article popper out at me called “Tom Petty on past Confederate flag use”. It is a relatively short article written by Andy Greene and published by Rolling Stones about why Tom Petty agrees with South Carolina’s decision to take the confederate flag down from their government buildings. Even though the timing of the lowering of the flag could have been a bit better, the country was torn between white on black violence, I still agree with the decision South Carolina legislature made.…

These three transformations were caused by the wrath of Dionysus and Artemis and ultimately these transformations can be seen as means of control or assertion of power. We see this assertion of power when Artemis, “gave his dripping head the horns of a stag, stretched out his neck, covered his body with spotted hyde, and instilled fear within him,” (Ovid 3.203-208) or when Artemis made Callisto’s “hands curve into paws with sharp claws, and her face, once praised by Jove, became a broad, ugly, grin” (Ovid 2.531-536). Pentheus falls under the same category, except he dies from Dionysus’s worshippers. The reason I think that they went through such extreme measures, transforming them so cruelly, is because they are seen as lesser gods and goddesses compared to Zeus, Poseidon, Hera and other more powerful gods and they want to improve in a way. They wanted to take advantage of naive targets in order to improve their godly status or show that they are indeed as powerful as some of the other gods…

Both Osiris and Hercules were gods admired by many people, and these representations of them in the form of a statue shows how people sincerely devoted their love and time praising these figures. Another similarity between the two goddesses is that they are both daughters of gods. Both deities were daughters of Titans. Even though their parents were gods, it does not imply that they did not possess the chthonic attributes. Many of the heavenly deities such as Zeus and Hermes have such attributes (Guiley 42). However, humans did not fear them as much as they did the underground gods.…

At first glance, the Hercules and the Hydra sculpture is easy to pass by. Located in the outside sculpture garden it stands on a slightly elevated bronze platform, which stands on a bigger, more elevated concrete pedestal that also rests on a larger concrete pedestal that has four embedded lights, each on one corner. The viewing area is large and allows for the audience to view the sculpture up close and far, while still being able circumambulate around the statue at a variety of distances. Because of the vastness of the space around the sculpture, at first glance from the walkway, the sculpture does not seem to be a big piece. However, the closer the proximity towards the sculpture, the bigger the piece seems to get, appearing as if Hercules…

However, there are still remains of the Archaic temple of Apollo and pieces of sculpture. On the east pediment of the temple there are four horses in the center followed by three Korai and three Kouroi with lions hunting their prey on the ends. On the west part of the temple it depicts Dionysus among the Thiads. The Greek god Dionysus was believed to be similar to Apollo in the fact that they both were very young gods and did what they pleased. However, it is fair to say that Dionysus was more the mischievous of the two.…
