Values In Nursing Practice

Values are characteristics that are the driving force to the nursing practice. Every nurse has a different list of values that they exhibit through their care and practice. By seeing different areas from the hospital and clinic, I was able to see different values in action.
One of the foundations that the nursing profession is based upon is the value of caring. Caring is a value that I saw used in every situation and experience that I saw while in this clinical rotation. One specific example that I remember vividly was during the time where the newborn I was assigned was upset to be in the nursery and away from her mother. In order to do the hearing screen properly, the baby had to stop crying and fussing around. To calm her, the nurse held

To be able to establish the value of wisdom, a person has to know not only what textbooks and research says about something, but also what happens in practice. In order to build this value in my future, I will have to be very attentive not only to my patient’s care, but also to those nurses and doctors who have much more experience than I do. By listening to the nurses who have been practicing for years, I will be able to learn far more than I would by sticking to what I find on my …show more content…
The day that I was in the clinic, I watched this nurse message providers, patients, and other staff about a variety of situations varying from prescriptions and appointments to lab results. This particular nurse came across a patient who had called the clinic wanting a change in his dose for Viagra. The nurse was able to get the patient on the phone and ask him a variety of questions about what he was experiencing. By using her value of professionalism, the nurse was able to make what could have been an awkward conversation, something comfortable for the patient. Also, she was able to figure out the exact problem and address it with a physician so the man was able to get a proper dosage for his needs. I, as a student nurse and future nurse, should demonstrate the value of professionalism with every patient I encounter. I plan to continue demonstrating this value by continually learning in school how to interact with patients in a professional manner. Furthermore, I can demonstrate this value by showing respect and autonomy for the patient. Throughout my nursing career, I may experience situations that can be uncomfortable but, by exhibiting professionalism, I will be able to keep the patient comfortable and willing to discuss the problems they are

“Vickie never shied from a challenge” (Baier & Schomaker, 1995, p.70). Vickie did what other nurses thought was impossible and managed to successfully brush her teeth. The small and easy task healthy people do every day made Sue feel much better and more confident in herself. If every nurse acted in the way Vickie did, hospitals and medical settings would be more successful and patients would be much happier with their care. Sometimes the littlest signs of care can make patients day, which leads to a better attitude and improvements in their…

I believe that it is a demanding task for nurses to maintain an outward look of professionalism in the midst of seeing dying patients. However, this daunting character should not hinder me from delivering quality care that is expected of me. When I become a full-fledged nurse in the future, I will therefore strive to uphold the role of nurse as a “protector” in a critical care unit. Patients are there primarily because they cannot protect themselves. It is my job to ensure their safety and their family.…

Research, Roles, and Values in Nursing Nurses perform many roles as they provide care on any given day. Nurses are educators, leaders, managers, providers of care, and members of a profession. They use the latest research and evidence-based practice to provide care to their patients. Nursing theories are also incorporated into the daily routines of nursing. A theory is “a method of perceiving reality and mapping the complex processes of human action and interaction that affect nursing care” (Houser, 2012, p. 135).…

Nurses are champions in adapting to change and identifying creative measures to help modify their practice, so it is not surprising that they are eager to meet these challenges head on. The assumption has been made that the delegation of physician care to FNPs will lead to better use of resources, however nurses must continue to be mindful of the possible risks and implications that may accompany these demands. Sacrificing nursing values cannot be tolerated. It continues to be a slippery slope as nurses cross the line into a medical role while maintaining a nursing framework. Having a concrete understanding of nursing theory and nursing values will help preserve the nursing identity during the newest healthcare…

While medical professionalism can be defined many ways, for me it is a belief system in which group members (“professionals”) declare to each other and the public the shared competency standards and ethical values they promise to uphold in their work and what the public and individual patients can and should expect from medical professionals.1 Simply put, professionalism is a shared understanding of its members who pledge to uphold a process of personal development, lifelong learning, and participation in a social enterprise that continually seeks to express expertise and caring in its work. As a medical student participating in clinical rotations, this can be demonstrated in the manner in which we dress each day, our promptness for arriving at each shift, and how we interact with our patients, hospital staff, classmates, and preceptors. Our training and experience places us in a position where we are being trusted with the privilege of sharing someone’s best, worst, and most private moments of their life. Therefore, we are held to a higher level of professionalism than the ordinary job-holding person in society, which is as it should be. With this definition and the significance it holds in mind, we can evaluate the origin of my concerns regarding medical…
