As we all know, social media started being an enormous part of our lives less than ten decades ago. People from all over the world now communicate, share and learn online, which results in 40 million Tweets, 3.5 billion Facebook messages and 6 billion Google searches per day. Many people believe that those outstanding numbers of online activity are directly linked to the motivation of discrimination, but controversly, that is not the case. As a matter of fact, social media raises awareness, enhances the well being of victims and is resourceful to them, thus confirming that social media indeed has a positive impact on discrimination.

In most cases that involve discrimination, people do not know that they have been victim of discrimination. Seeing other stories or certain information that directly relate to them, though, helps them realize that maybe what was done to them was not right. This very situation once happened to a female student who experienced sexual assault but at first did not know. After watching a feminist video on Twitter, though, she realised that she had been more than just discriminated and proceeded to find the man’s license plate number and to report to the police. In other cases, victims can receive help from people who have resources in the human rights field and who keep their eyes peeled, and that, simply by sharing their experiences online. An individual who tweeted about their story that involved workplace discrimination once received a message from a human rights manager who was willing to use their expertise to help. It is also easy to find out online about available services that help prevent or fix any problems related to discrimination. The Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC), for example, has the goal to prevent discrimination by lawfully imposing The Human Rights Code, which gives the right to every resident in Ontario to live in a discrimination-free environment; whether it is at work, at home or in facilities.
